Amtrak Bagage Car

I got a very nice Amtrak Phase III Superliner A+B Kato set for my Birthday, and just got the matching P42.  I've got a nice Amtrak train going as a result.  However, if I look at the routes of interest rather than using the "coach baggage" in the set they would have run with a baggage car.

Apparently these were heritage cars that were converted to baggage duty.  There are a couple of different styles running around.

Somehow I'm guessing no one has made anything like this, given they are a fairly unique bit.  Has anyone kitbashed one?  Got any tips?

I have a couple of Amtrak baggage cars from the smoothside sets Kato released, close to 20 years ago I think.

I believe these are what you are looking for.

Con-Cor also has a two-door baggage car, not sure of the prototype but it's available in Amtrak.

Kato has also released at least two different single door versions.

There is also Kato 106-3513 Smooth side Baggage Set. They only come in Phase I though.

Not the 1257.  Always has been a baggage car.  Built for ATSF as 3662 it became AMTK 1151 when sold, renumbered again when converted to HEP.

There were some leg-rest coaches in the 1700-series but there were a number of older baggage cars that were HEP'ed and remained in series beyond when most heritage cars were retired.  My suggestion would be the baggage car from the Kato El Capitan train but there are other options available as well.

I can't find the Con-Cor.  The Walthers and Kato (106-3512 actually) both look pretty good.  Sure they are Phase 1, but a Phase 1 baggage on a Phase 3 train would not be unusual at all.

I think I'll look around and see if I can find the Kato at a reasonable price.

One thing to remember... the earliest rebuilds had phase II paint, the red and blue stripes without the pointless arrow.

If you're feeling ambitious, M&R makes a nice set of etched sides for the more common converted 1700 series (centered door, 85') baggage cars. Sold by N Scale Supply: http://www.nscalesupply.com/MRS/MRS-133.html. I have a couple sets but have not put any together yet. I have seen them built up and they are nice. Needs a Con-Cor Budd car donor. One of the Kato Budds would work too I'm sure. These are the cars you usually see on the long distance superliner trains. There are also two-door cars that are used just as much if not more.

I got my e-bay find today.  Why these are packaged as a two-pack when most trains had one is beyond me.

So now I have what I feel is a prototypical consist:

Superliner Coach

I have an extra coach so I can make it 3 Coaches as well.  That's pretty much the usual consist of the City of New Orleans near me, with 2 or 3 coaches depending on time of year.

Next step, sound decoder install in the P42; and then I need to think about how to light the red lights on the rear car.
