I just read the latest TRP which has a feature on Marias Pass helpers (F Units) on BN in the late 1970s.

Sometimes I think if I grew up out west I'd be modeling BN late 1970s! 8)

Oh man, I heard that was wild out there.

Did you hear the story about the PM Berk? It was supposed to be working that weekend, but I think one of the tubes started leaking. It's a real heart breaker for its crew. But that's what gives steam its charm, right?

From my Flickr colleague Zach Pumphery http://www.trainweb.org/semorails/me.html http://www.flickr.com/people/uptrain/who is a RailAmerica Conductor (Used with his permission):

The Valley Eagle Heritage Tour rolls into Kansas City over the KCT High Line behind UP 844 as UP Train SMVKC 04. The nice part about this trip was seeing her on rail she'd traveled in revenue service with a train that probably looked similar to the ones she pulled into KC.

Locomotive: UP 844

4-4-10
Kansas City, MO

And Ed, this is the CHARM of steam!

I like to see a lack of smoke.  That equals proper firing of the locomotive.  When belching smoke (especially if not under an extreme load), that's either intentionally done for show or is the act of an incompetent fireman.  Of course, I have heard that an exception to that may blowing sand through the tubes to clean out the soot.

True on both counts about the smoke.  Also, isn't that an oil burner?  They didn't smoke as much as a coal burner.
