A U-23B at Vulcan MAterial, Jessup, MD.  Turns out she's radio control equipped, but as this was a Sunday she wasn't running.

Due to trackwork by Amtrak on the Northeast Corridore, CSX has been running a lot of daylight jobs.  Received word yesterday that they were running the Rock Runner to Bowie with an SD80MAC on the headend running long hood forward.  Quite rare.  Got to Bowie and talking with some Amtrak workers found out I had missed it by 10 minutes.  The hunt was on.  Did hang around the wye for a few minutes.  Here's the south wye and it doesn't look like it's seen a train in quite awhile

Followed the Pope's Creek Branch to LaPlata as I also had word that a rail train was heading that way.  A CSX track supervisor stopped by and informed me the rail train was coming but much later.  Asked him about the Rock Runner and he said follow him.  So I did and found the power.

It was well worth the chase.

In the early days of Conrail, there were a number of small, barely profitable branch lines all over New Jersey.  On the Ishpanozzing Branch in Thidwick County, CR managers calculated that it was more economical to service the GP-38-2 that worked the branch, at Lud Kissel's Texaco than to keep the small engine house staffed at Ishpanozzing.  Here we see the crew tanking up with some Fire Chief, and picking up some Chiclets and a bag of ice.
