Weekend Update 3/28/2010

Since I had to get up early with the baby anyway . . .and the coffee has finally kicked in (she's back asleep), I thought I'd launch this week's progress fest.

I started installing the storage tanks and piping for the refinery:




And I started reading Bernie's steel mill book - which IMHO EVERYONE needs to get a copy of.

I built the highway bridge at the east end of Elkins.  But you probably already knew that...



I've also invented (or at least discovered) a fix for those old Kato F units with "perfect track" syndrome... i.e. they need perfect track to avoid intermittent stalling due to the design of the pick up shoes.

Not much here. Did a product review for Eishindo's new Hankyu 9000 Series T scale trainset. Not that anyone here would be interested...

Lee is "channeling" the ghost of George Eastman................. ;D

Slow week up here in da "Great Yucky North" as we watch the last of the snow melt and cause everything to become a big wet, muddy mess; a going concern if thou has a six year old.......laundry took first place over modeling....sigh

Did manage to pretty up another SOO gon and 54' bulkhead flat however.....







Maybe next week will yield more......from the Peterborough chapter of the "Tom Mann Wanna be society".....I remain...stuck in the mud Pud ! ;D

What's the story on the boxcar in the lower left?  I presume its some sort of clearance car - I'd love to hear how it came to be in existence on your layout.

From numerous attempts with said camera, with a multitude of tweaks thanks to Picasa 3.6.

Most of my stuff from the weekend ended up in my Enola thread.  Here's just a quick shot of a weathered N scale Micro Trains Conrail gon with a Hay Brothers Garage scrap metal load.  The gon was weathered with acrylic washes (this was before I invested in a decent airbrush):

What's the story on the boxcar in the lower left?  I presume its some sort of clearance car - I'd love to hear how it came to be in existence on your layout.

This is a "icicle breaker"....The CPR built them from old boxcars at the Calgary shops and used them in the tunnels in the Rockies. Icicles can be a hazard to dome cars of the "Canadian" so these guys run behind a locomotive on a freight and clear out the potential danger.



I built this a few years ago I guess and it kinda appears now and then on the layout... neat conversation piece....

Tried out Tom's  "fade brew" (Pollyscale Aged White and distilled water) airbrushed onto a few models.   Will post pics soon.

Hi Guys first let me say some great work by all as usual  can not wait to see what else pops up in this thread through the day.

Second Richie you do some great flatcar loads how many are you up to by now?

Now finally I have something to show in the weekend update enjoy.
This is my very first piece of rolling stock designed and built by me.The etching was done by PPD LTD. over in Scotland and I can not say enough good things about them very helpful and just great to work with.I had a bit of help from someone on this board that I cannot thank enough, I will not say his name if he wants to be known I will let him speak I don't want him bombarded with questions and what not I bugged him enough ;D
This model here is my very first so it is not perfect there are a few mistakes but I am very proud of it none the least.The next couple will be much better as I learned allot by building this first one and have revised my drawings.
As I said I have learned allot by doing this N6B cabin and I am working on a few more cars for my fleet that I know will never be produced.And I will say to anyone that has thought about doing this go for it ,it is allot of fun and the rewards are great.
