I've begun tranforming a "mirror-mirror" Con Cor Diner into a Canadian National dining car - I call it "mirror-mirror" because, as Charlie Vlk pointed out on Fred Klein's excellent "Prototypes for Passenger Car site" the Diner is a mistake; a mirror image model of the GN Lake series dining car. It places the kitchen on the opposite side to any dining car I've seen (although there may well be an example of this - I'm not aware of it)

Therefore; before I can use the model, the kitchen and corrador have to relocated, thus she's in what I like to refer to as the "bondo bucket" stage of modeling..... hopefully next week will see some photo worthy progress.

didn't do much modeling this weekend, the Family and I went to a Titanic Exihbit in Wiesbaden, Germany. I did get a chance to take these 2 shots.



They are doing some work in the station, but none the less, still a beautiful station, I love these older European stations.

I spent most of this weekend involved in a wedding, so no time for trains for me. Here's some progress photos on my SD70Ms from last weekend though:





BLMA fans finally installed on the long hood, after painting the blades white and the base black, as well as the inside of the fan housing.

Cab got the anti-glare panel finished (maybe I'll paint instead of decaling next time), numberboards decaled and installed and window gaskets painted. I tried decaling the wipers on the glass inserts as shown recently by Gary Hinshaw.... with no luck. Not sure how I'll tackle them now....

Now I just need to get some better lighting.  :'(

I went through a couple of iterations of my camera car this week, but I've got something that works now. Hope to have a more finished item to photograph next week. I managed to get the airbrush out too since I wasn't at work, and here's the results:

Sorry for the yellowy images, my daylight bulbs blew and since it's only 11 weeks before I'm off it doesn't seem worth replacing them, so instead I'm running down my stock of normal bulbs.

Only thing I did this week was to remove car names from a Kato Broadway Limited 4 car add on set and replace with new names using Microscale decals.  The old names came off easily using a pencil eraser and working slowly.

I did a little tracklaying—little being the operative word. This is a 36-inch gauge turnout in Z scale:
 


I also started work on a little something to run on the track (although it will be a very long time in coming). This is the crankshaft for a 32-ton three-foot-gauge two-truck Shay (Ely-Thomas Lumber Company No. 6) in Z scale, sitting on the face of a dime:

It's the second crankshaft I've built, and I may build one more to improve it a little. No lathe, mill or drill press used; it's 13 separate parts soldered together.

No modeling here--I've spent the weekend assembling and "standing up" an new computer, so I can have a fighting chance at editing video in less than geologic time.

New box: AMD Phenom X4 (quad-core), 2.4GHz, 4GB RAM, 500GB HD

The fact that I'm logged in and making this entry means that things are going pretty well so far.

I've also been working on the Dubuque plan since I can't seem to get out the garage to cut lumber. (60's on Wed, fingers crossed).

It's not too often the a model uses 'broader' curves than the prototype, but that was the case for my original drawing.  In order to get closer to the map, I'm going to have to go about 6" deeper than I had wanted to. This means four modules instead of two, but also means I can get it onto my Jeep.  I overlayed the map with 15" inside radaii and scaled down the map to fit a 9' long layout.




I may still move a couple things as I have two spots I want to be able to photograph close up; the south opening to the tunnel and the depot platform looking south so those two item will probably get pushed closer to themiddle than they are now.

A couple more decoder installs, and shipped the Elkins Roundhouse off to Long Island to its new home.  Plus some yard work... on the freight yard that is...

As usual, good stuff posted. I didn't model this weekend, but took a large step towards joining in on the weathering fun.

This week I received both Tom Mann's Weathering and Pelle Soeborg's Done in a Day: Easy detailing and weathering... and based on their shopping lists I bought chalks, paints, brushes, an airbrush compressor and more. After the spray booth order is complete I hope I can convert this investment into likable models very soon. This is a major move considering I found my new, unused airbrush with original sales receipt from 2004. I'll blame the slow start on college. Yeah, that's it. It's someone else's fault...
