The new 40' Woodchip cars are arriving at stores now. These will be nice little cars.

Mmm.  A couple of C&O cars might help round out the fleet... Now that I have an actual yard for Elkins (and therefore only a short imaginary line to Durbin!)

They had some of these on display at Chantilly a couple weeks ago.  Too bad I can't use them for anything.

Since I've never seen a single car of this type in my life what are they used for exactly and where would they be, such that I've never seen any?

Short answer... They were a cheap way of making high volume low-weight material profitable.  The WM converted a slew of old 55T coal hoppers to chip service by adding 3'6" extensions to the top of the car.  Wood chips are a link in the paper-making food chain.

It will never go there unless it involves steam...or a hot brunette.

The C&O Color Guide has a picture of a C&O car being loaded by a conveyor from a converted trailer in Doswell Virginia in 1978. C&O had a number of 3 bay hoppers converted to wood chip service in 1962, so they lasted awhile.

Wood chips are a low profi commodity for a railroad, so they tend to be transported over relatively short distances by rail.
