Atlas Pre-Order Announcement
« on: January 20, 2010, 11:28:13 PM »

I got my copy of the N Scale Collector magazine in the mail the other day, and Atlas' ad on the back cover is a pre-order announcement that hasn't been posted to their site yet, so I thought I'd report it here...

The announcement is for a re-run of the GP38-2 in new paint schemes.  They show:
Canadian National (GTW reporting marks)
Durham & Southern
Soo Line
CSX (blue/grey)
Delaware & Hudson
Union Pacific

The ad also lists BNSF and Penn Central as being available.
Ad notes that the website announcement will go live the first week in February

D&H 38's...  Nom nom.  Would these be in Lightning Strip or the less inspired blue scheme?

Oh man, D&H GP38-2s? I believe those were in Potomac Yard service. Hmmm

I'm guessing more in this series, which would be way way past your era Lee:

But maybe they'll do the late 70s style:

Heh.  I know it's "out of era" but that's one of those striking paint schemes I saw a lot of back in the day... Should the planets realign to a CR-era themed layout, they would definitely find a home on Mill Street...

Wait! D&H heads, is this right? They intially were in lightning? Then years later returned to lightning? I can't find any pix to support this though - all are basic blue or hasty patch jobs like this:

http://www.rr-fallenflags.org/dh/dh7318akg.jpg

PAINT SCHEMES
Consensus is that every loco had the "potential" to be a bit different. That having been said, it seems there are 3 basic paint schemes during the dwindling years of the D&H.

1) On arrival 1976, all units came in lightning stripe, series 7314-7325. Paint applied over former LV red tended to weather, fade, or come off in sheets, quickly...

 2) Once reshopped, some units were painted all (altshultz) blue. Yellow lettering, white numberboards with black numbers; large yellow shield under cab window each side; zebra stripes on both ends; small shield on nose in middle of stripes; yellow stripe on side of walkways; handrails black stanchions with yellow rail; vertical railings by steps were yellow. Looks like under carriage was black. See (with magnifiers) p 96 of Plant & Plant (D&H In Color #2).

3) 1978 reshops, some of the reshops came out with yellow noses and a large yellow shield on the nose. No stripes on either end. Balance of paint job as #2 above. See p 71 Plant & Plant, and p. 15 & 32 Reiser (Bridgeline Blues)

Woah, anyone else having a late 80's Life-Like flashback? Their GP38 in DH was one of my first engines.

The D&H Lightning Stripe GP38-2's were a CPR heritage Scheme of early 1990's vintage...
They never existed under D&H or GTI...

The drawing looks like the paint scheme in the link above; all blue with a yellow nose and large shield under the cab window.  Number shown is 7319...

Sadly I can't find a shot of the lead engine, but judging by the fan and radiator, it looks like it could be a 38.  Did D&H have straight 38's that wore the lightning stripe?

The 7400's were ex RDG GP39-2's. The ex-LV 38-2's were the 7300's. The 7600's were the bought-new 39-2's. These came in the lightning stripe scheme. I saw the CP heritage unit last summer.

I myself am thinking about that D&S 38-2.  That would look good on the point of some coal headed to the power plant.
