Walthers PS Coaches are here

  Walthers latest N Passenger Car, a Pullman Standard coach is now out. My Chuck pack for various roads came Saturday, a similar pack from BLW containing duplicate roads (Iwanted 2 cars each) and to spread my buisness around should come this week. Walthers car is a model of Pullman Standard fluted side NYC  coaches recieved in late 1947thru 1949 as part of their postwar "Great Steel Fleet" of cars. Wlthers has also modeled the car with smooth sides having a belt rail strip above and below the windows and fluting on the lower part of the platform loading doors,a feature found mostly on Budd corrigated cars. None of the cars I ordered feature full side skirting ,but several have a short bit of skirting next to the vestibule step wells and at the opposite end as found on some roads either as built or with side skirts removed. The paint schemes are very nicely done with one or 2 possible gripes. The C&O car has small C&O Progress heralds on the pier pannels near car ends,but the letter board is Yellow with no lettering. I thought they should be lettered in the stylized black road name lettering like om the old MRC Rowa Con Cor C&O cars. Can anyone tell me if C&O later eliminated this lettering,I know many cars later got smooth sides. The Rio Grande car is painted in the later single stripe scheme,while very nice if they were able to do the complex multi stripe scheme on an incorrect non fluted sleeper and baggage car they could have put it on the corrugated coach. Here are my brief feelings about each road recieved. NYC, very nice and correct. Rock Island,a good stand in for their PS  coaches after skirts were removed. Santa Fe, their PS coaches had smaller paired windows,model is an ok stand in.SP,looks like their non articulated pre war coaches used on Californian train a few of these recieved the stainless (aluminum) with scarlett letter board scheme  with fluting left on,most got smooth sides when repainted,later those with fluting got smooth sides. Cars do not resemble SP Budd Sunsett coaches at all.UP,looks very nice,large windows on sides make cars look like their rebuilt heavyweight cars, or more like Wabash pool cars used on the City OF ST. Louis. C&NW,most of their cars featured small paired windows execpt for some cars acquired 2nd hand. GN,a nice stand in for their postwar cars. Nate Goodman (Nato). Salt Lake,Utah.

Good to hear about the accuracy of the NYC models.
I was hopeful these would be done correctly, (unlike the 10-6 and baggage).

    My other order from BLW for PS coaches is on the way and included are the latest releases of the PS Baggage cars ,C.G.W. the accurate prototype for the model, Soo Line, and Pierre Marquette (PM) C&O style paint with and without fluted sides. Nate Goodman (Nato).

I ordered two NYC cars, also on the way. Nothing I really need, but they'll look nice behind the Walthers RS-2, if I decide to do a museum/tourist line layout. Might just use them as fill-ins instead of the heavyweight coaches that always seem to be just around the corner.

Got mine today. Wow! Never was much of a passenger train person, but this has me thinking early sixties passenger service. Now for some flexi-vans, diner, sleeper, and more head end cars. Does anyone make NYC dome cars  ;D ;D ;D ;D.

BTW, did you know the NYC considered a dome car when they were re-equipping the 20th Century in 1948? I have seen a NYC drawing dated that year showing a low profile dome car that would have cleared the low tunnels and bridges. They decided against the concept.

    The Chicago Great Western Baggage cars look nice they are the prototype for the model. I must say the Maroon Soo car is also very nice, cars look similar to only lightweight cars Soo had if I recall correctly. The metallic "Pierre Marquette" lettring on the letter boards of the C&0/PM scheme baggage cars is also classy looking. I'am guessing Walthers will either do a diner or a grill diner next,then they would have a mostly complete train, baggage,coach,sleeper,food service car. Nate Goodman (Nato).

For those of you who noticed that they did these in PRR.  No, they are not a foobie (thanks John for letting us keep this word).  The PRR bought a batch not long before the PC merger and they are done in the correct paint scheme.
