You know I have one of your gondolas and it is just sweet! It costs a little bit more than a regular car, but it is also better than a regular car to me.  I don't have to lower it or mess around with the couplers. The trucks look new as well?  Just weather and run it. I really don't know why people give you a hard time. I'm sure if your car were "the ultimate" they would cost more and more people would complain.

The grabirons on this are 0.005" stainless steel wire, and the handrails are 0.008" phosphor bronze (all hand-formed).   I've found that the SS and PB are relatively durable, esp. considering their size.

Amazing. What a difference. You definitely have prompted a re-think on a couple of projects. Are those the Gold Medal stantions?

Yea Ed, thanks for stirring up those scale handrail hormones again!  ;)  BTW, I just realized this is a standard cab flared radiator '70M.  What did you bash that from?

Back on topic, for the most part, I'm perfectly happy with cast-on grabs on a freight car.  The few exceptions are high profile items like the freestanding grabs on well cars.

It's the stock Athearn.  It's actually incorrect for the prototype but I didn't realize until after I bought the model.  IIRC Kato had the correct cab, tho I'm not sure about their radiator.  Oh, well.....



The stanchions are the GMM.  I use the longer ones, then trim them flush after soldering the handrail into place.  The safety chain is JnJ.  Not indestructible, but they do stand up to the occasional errant thumb.

The one thing that still bugs me with the Athearns is the "coke bottle glasses" look of the windshields (and the cast-on wiper blades).
