Anybody do one ? Easy or is there a PIA problem  . Finding good side shots of 1959 F-85 or F-85A TOFC's are eluding me so far .

Here's a couple:

Between the extra 4' in length and the flush deck on the MTL car, it may be more work than starting from scratch.  I think the car I posted in the 'scratch built' thread was following that prototype.

If you haven't seen this:

It's useful for knowing the nuber series of whatever body class you're looking for.

I think the '57 Railroad Cyclopedia has a drawing of one of the F85 cars, I don't remember what class right now.  If if won't break the binding, I try and get a scan.

Jason, If you can scan those drawings, may I have a copy as well?

Based on the photos Jason posted, it looks like the N Scale Kits channel-side flat would make  a reasonable starting point.  The length could be easily cut down and appropriate side-sill detail could be added.  I don't know what the floor detail is like on the F85's, but the kit has no detail, so it would be easy to add.  :)

The underside cross bracing is different: the F85 in the 2nd photo has small I beams most of the length while the model has deep cross ribs.  These could be cut out if they bothered you.

I have the UP F-70-2 and F-70-3 drawings in 1024 size in my Others Picasa file if others want something a bit larger . Not much detail , but there is still info , and may or may not be the same for the F-85 and F-85A .

Me thinks this car would be a good request from N Scale Kits. They do have a F39 and Flexi Van cars in development. NSK seems to be carving out a niche for itself in intermodal, so let's bombard him with emails and request it.

Great idead Bryan , I sent him this

Could you consider doing the F85 TOFC in N scale please .
Athearn has one in HO http://www.adairshops.com/images/product/finished_cars/2015A-R_800.jpg which looks to me like the UP F-70-2 design that in '63ish was leased to TTX .

They began in 12-1958 or 1-1959 and is as important as the PRR F39 75 footers to model the beginnings of TOFC , that has been ignored in N for the most part.

UP F-70-2 was an early bird with these 85 footers in TOFC's in early 1959

and F-70-3 Auto racks in early 1959

Got this back fast , wow

Richard

Many thanks for your note.

You have spotted that we have been working on the early intermodal cars – with the Clejan Spine in production, the PRR and Trailer Train F39 tooled apart from some elements that are being reworked – notably the important rubbing rails which were not quite right, and the Flexi-Van prototype shown last month at the NMRA
Convention! This is an area that has not had a lot of attention by the rtr and this does leave an opportunity.

We have done a lot of work in research and evidence gathering on the F-85 cars but your links are really helpful. I hope to announce something that will interest you early next Spring!

You are right that the F-70-2 design by Pullman Cars would be a reasonable one to work on but currently we are exploring the General American G-85 car as our prototype. These cars were in use fairly widely, including SP too and a number were taken into TTX service. The idea of making a tri-level open autodeck is one that is really worth exploring and I will take this forward - thanks for the drawings. Have you any good sources for pictures of the F-70 cars as we have not got a lot of material here at present?

I would be interested to hear your views.

Best wishes

 Peter

It is... the real fun comes when you start getting into Pullman not-so Standard flats...
