Their are people on these here forums who stiull believe that MTL and Kato are the leaders in N scale because.......well, they were 25 years ago. But itmes change and Atlas and a few others have caught and in reality passed MTL and Kato. Atlas has been on top in n scale for awhile now. 

N scale has matured quite a bit over the last few years and now new, talented manufacturers have entered on the stage. I believe Atlas is vulnerable at this stage and they better be careful.

Atlas has not stagnated. Each time they release a new body type they seem to keep up with trends or start them (etched walkways and end platforms, super thin railings [Atlas tankcars], etc.). Look at their beercan tankers vs their 23,500gal tanker or their PS1 40' boxcar vs their 40' AAR rebuild for example. They keep up and improve/innovate. But IMO, this superfriends idea is weak... one hopes they don't release another animated video ala trainman.

Competition keeps mfg's fresh and on their toes, though it would seem that some are impervious to their competition based on their time honored ability to resist change, yet thrive.

Answer:    No

Reason:    I am not an "enthusiast" of any company that requires my money to survive...the question should be "Is Atlas a Puddington enthusiast?".....I mean; isn't the customer "king".....?

Too many model railroaders place some mfg's on a pedistal and become so aligned with them they almost become marketing tools for them. I like Atlas; but I hope they "like" me better......if you catch my drift......

If it helps them build their customer base without lessening their efforts as far as fidelity to prototype, there's nothing wrong with it.

Mike, I never said Atlas has stagnated. Only that they are vulnerable.

I don't think they are vulnerable.  They release new products on a regular basis in the Master series which always are state of the art.  Even the new releases in the Trainman series are a high-enough quality to appeal to long-time modelers.  New track products also are released regularly.  More models of esoteric prototypes are being offered.  And they do all of this simultaneously in three scales.  How are they not still on top of their game?

They aren't slipping.
