I really should just suck it up and do one of these myself at some point, but it'll be tough to reach the bar that's now been set.

Yes, Ian and I are waiting for ours,  :)

Thanks for all the very kind words, everyone! I really appreciate it! ;D

Chulvis, I will be sure to bring it next time I come down. ;)

C885B, You're probably right! I'm batting about 500 with kitbashing something in N scale only to have produced commercially a short time later. This includes an SD40T-2, GP60 and an SD75I (OK, athearn did a SD75M but that's close enough!). My only hold-outs so far are a GP60M, GP60B and now this.

up1950s, I used a grinding bit on my hand held Dremel tool to carefully remove the bulge area that normally covers the motor. You must leave the part that goes over the top of the motor to act as a cradle. I followed Daniel Leavitt's lead as can be seen at http://www.trainboard.com/grapevine/showthread.php?t=105561

Really looks nice!!!

I was introduced to the SW1500s as a young teen in El Monte, CA.  One would regularly run from L.A. through to San Berdo on the old Pacific Electric line, with the crew always stopping for lunch at the old P.E. El Monte station.  Funny how few remain on class ones now... but then end cab switchers have been on the decline because of more power being desired for various switching operations.  I've even seen (and may have a shot of one) modern road units being used in Charlotte, N.C. as a switcher.  My how times have changed.
