I'd buy the Atlas one because atlas's quality is usually better than Athearns. I wonder if the difference could be made up by offering kits again??

For me...depends on the quality. If they are "close" but one is more than the other I would go for the one with the better quality. If it happens to be the more expensive one, then so be it, if cheaper, same. I really don't care where something is made, as long as it meets my standards. I'm not going to buy something that is even a hair less quality, or even so very close just because its made here in the States. Thats just my purchasing habits.

At the moment a big difference between Atlas and Athearn (all other things being held equal) is that Atlas does their homework pretty well for paint schemes, while Athearn appears to skimp on this a bit.

Putting that aside, Athearn diesels have yet to come close to Atlas in terms of accuracy and quality IMHO.

you made it a $20.00US question.

Realistically it is more of a 25% question.  The made in china product being represented by a FVM boxcar as an example.  Feather River is listing upcoming releases at $13.75 from an MSRP of $16.95US.  This would relate to about $16.50ishUS as a FRTS discounted price for a 'made in America' product.  I'm willing to part with a little more coin or a few less boxcars to keep my friends and neighbors employed.

I personally have been having a small crisis of conscience about this.  Sending a signifigant number of hobby dollars 'offshore' every year has convinced me that I probably already have an overwhelming amount of what I may ever need.  A recent inventory also showed that I don't need nearly 'as much' more as I was thinking I did. 

This means that I would be happy to buy american for new products and troll eBay for those surplus offshore products.  Buying eBay I'm convincing myself that I'm keeping stuff out of landfills and simply trading dollars 'at home' since the foreign payout has already been made...

Most N scale product has always been imported. Roco, Lima, Minitrix, Arnold, Rivarossi, etc.  For a time some were doing some US product. Generally, however.. product has been imported. The constant exception has been MT. Has anyone ever produced locomotives in this country?
