86' Boxcar Doors

I've got a question about 86' auto parts Boxcars.

I know there was a preference amongst the auto manufacturers for cars with certain door arrangements.

I THOUGHT it fell along company lines, ie, GM liked the 8 door cars, Ford liked the 4 door cars.

I want to make sure about that, AND the make sure I get it right.

I'm planning on having a GM plant on the layout, and GM run through traffic (to the old Chevy/GMC factory in Baltimore), so I'm guessing it's all going to be one or the other for me, and I want to be sure I've got it right.

So what do you all know about this?

According to my sources (@ Bluford  ;)), you got it right, at least for early on.

Yes GM liked the 8, they also preferred plug doors if I recall.  (EDIT: Actually Mr. Ford liked the plug doors)

You want to search on MFCL for exact info, I recall seeing an auto parts discussion recently.

Yes,
GM preferred quad door cars and Ford and Chrysler preferred double door cars. However, with production patterns changing to some degree with every model year, they often got whatever they got. GM certainly wouldn't halt production because a double door car arrived at the dock, although it might earn a grumpy phone call from the traffic manager, any empty beats nothing. :-\

Craig, this means you need to do some of the normal CR Logo 8 door cars then!

Very nice topic Ed! I do need  now to get some of the BS cars as Freudenberg-NOK has 4 plants in New Hampshire for GM parts, and 2 of those plants just so happen to be in towns located on the layout. Now I just need to decide if I want to make that GE plant a Freudenberg-NOK instead, and move the GE plant to the other side of the layout. Both industries are gonna create quite a bit of traffic, but the 86'ers out of Freudenberg-NOK are going to be pretty impressive in my auto block trains. I'm figuring right now that they would most likely be tacked onto the head ends of empty finished vehicle trains from the GM Portland off load enroute west.

So more CR small logo and CRQ logos 8 doors Craig!

I would fancy more common and mundane' paint schemes over commerative, one off or bicentennial type paint jobs...
