Magor/AC&F boxcar from ESM.

I'm sure this will be a really cool car!

Can somebody tell me the specifics of the prototype? It looks like it has a diagonal panel roof but type of ends does it have?  Does this car have a 10' inside height or 10'6".  I ask because there may be some Northern Pacific applications here  :).

Thanks

Here is the photo from their web site.

This looks like a great choice...a new 40' plug door!
Best wishes, Dave

If you lend someone $20, and never see that person again, it was probably worth it.

Andrew,

According to the 1969 OER, the series 2000-2499 had a door height of only 7'-6", a door width of 6', and an inside height of 8'-6". These are short cars with a max height of 13'-9" (as you can see on the left side of the photo), which throws the proportions off a bit.

Hope this helps, Dave

the car does have a Stanray riveted diagonal roof.  Ends are 2-4 corrugated.  The model, with side vents and a charcoal heater, is specific to BAR/NH and would be a stretch for an NP stand-in.

Thanks for the info.  Probably not a good NP candidate but that leads to the next question.  Being a stranger to NE roads,  where would these boxcars have seen service?  I have not seen any in any NP pictures I have.  Did they get out west?  What did they haul (Potatoes? plenty of those in Idaho,  no need to import)?  I would love to get one.

Schweet!  Great prototype -- nice to see accurate roof/ends.  Once you start reading those RMJ back issues, that stuff really stands out.

Definitely not a good NP candidate, but the cars did run through all regions of the country in the 1950s and 1960s including out west.  They hauled Maine potatoes in the winter and clean paper products in the summer.  You easily can justify either BAR or NH out west in any of the SoM paint schemes.  The cars inherited by Penn Central were used for flour service in the northeast quadrant of the country.

Thanks Bryan,

One last question.  What was the build date on these?  My primary modelling period is October 1954.

The two of the four cars in the first release will be painted in the State of Maine scheme and will represent the AC&F cars built in 1953.  Artwork drawings for all of the cars in the first release are on the website.  One of the cars in the second release that will be in the SoM scheme will represent the Magor car built in 1950 - this is the car depicted in the NSR ad.  The second release will be roughly two or three months after the first.  So you will have three schemes initially to choose from (two BAR and one NH, three road numbers on each) that will fit into your era.

As I understand it the first cars were painted in the Red, White, & Blue scheme for both roads.

When did the BAR start painting them in the other scheme?  Basically a red car with the logo?

Also, when would the NH McGinnis lettering first appear on the car without the heater?

Thanks,
Mark

Yes - red/white/blue sides, blue roof, black ends for both roads.  BAR went to blue ends on repaints in the early 1960s.

BAR started using the all-red scheme in the late 1960s, but some cars continued into the 1970s in red/white/blue with just the graphics updated.  Some BAR cars had their heaters removed, but I don't think there is a definitive pattern as to when this occurred.  I've seen 1970s pictures of BAR cars in both paint schemes with and without heaters.  All of the 1980s pics I've seen are of cars without heaters.

No McGinnis scheme was ever used on the NH cars.  The NH cars debuted at the end of the Dulmaine era.  The Alpert scheme was used starting in the mid 1960s on cars that were refurbished, then sold and leased back to NH (still the "New Image" block herald, just not black/white/red-orange colors).  The heaters were removed at this time.  Only a handful of the cars survived to PC and CR, all without heaters.

FYI - new/last-serviced dates or eras are on the website for all ESM products where applicable.

I see that the running boards and end platform will be etched, does anyone know if the rest of the details will be molded on?

Free-standing grabs on the roofwalk end platforms, everything else molded on the body.

Will you also have the heater levers on the sides?
