Ideas for extending Atlas GP 7 exhausts ?

I am modeling a Great Northern GP 7 - 1950 production model. These had as either original equipment or retro fits taller exhaust stacks than the Atlas model. The stacks are roughly the same height as the winterization hatch on the second fan. Anyone got a bright idea how to kitbash these ? They are small, oblong stacks and I'm fresh out of inspiration.....

Got a photo link?  I can probably eyeball it and figure out how to fab something out of band aids and baling wire...

I did my extensions on my RS-3 fleet with bits of styrene shaped and painted...

Cut the stacks off a LL SD7, glue to the GP7. Fill in any cracks and file smooth.

If it were me...I'd make a stack out of Plastruct or Evergreen slightly smaller and shorter than the original. I'd then wrap that with thin sheet styrene cut to the appropriate height. That way I acheive the hollow stack, the correct height and I only have to hide a single seam off body (preventing damage to other details).

I still think the Sunrise part is the way to go.

They weren't spectacularly popular, so they're probably still out there somewhere.

I've done a GN GP-7 much the same way as Lee mentioned, simply filing an appropriate sized full length piece of Evergreen Styrene on the edges with enough length to cut two extensions from and discarded the remainder of the filed piece and putting the un-filed piece back in stock.  It's easier to hold a full length piece to file the edges round and trim the necessary parts from the stock.

Ed is my hero......yes; I said it.... a Conrail Character is the caped and masked hero of this 1970's CPR modeler....... I found the "last freakin set of Sunrise SD 7/9 exhaust extentions in Toronto.; maybe the known freakin universe for all I know at an LHS for a discounted .99 cent price (Canadian, so whats that...free ?)

They are PERFECT for the Great Northern GP 7. Ed; you're a "steely eyed exhaust stack stud"; ol' buddy........(ok; that was over the top; ahhhhh what the hell; he saved ya a bunch of work..........LOL)

Does anyone know when the GN started running their GP 7's short hood forward ? I know the Great Northern ran them long hood forward, as did many railways for crew protection in a mishap. That said, the reference photo's I am using for my GP 7 clearly show them in short hood forward service - as they are Big Sky Blue units; the photo's are post 1968 or so... any wisdom on this question would be appreciated.

Where the F is the F?  Can you see it in the pictures?  I don't know about the GN, but a lot of roads stopped differentiating between "forward and backward" operation once the bi-directional utility of the Geep was fully realized, (and roundhouses and turntables started to become an endangered species) but the "F" designation remained for the benefit of the mechanical department.

I'd have to agree with lee, find some prototype pictures.

Don't know if this helps, but from the prototype, all of BN's ex-GN GP7s and ex-GP9s (and also the SD7s and SD9s) were long hood foward. So I'm not quite sure if they ran short-hood foward or not.
