Hey dave, Congrats!

My own lady has instructed me that i am *not* to buy a ring until after we've already signed on a house. Knowing we both have significant space-consuming hobbies, it's probably going to be a long search for the right place.

Anyway. This week, i finally got a decoder installed in my CR (Ex-RDG) GP35:

I am glad that you're okay and recovering.  The alternative is, well, not preferable.  Sorry to hear about the self-injections twice daily, though.  I don't think I could do that!

On a more positive note, while I accomplished zero on the model railroading front, I did become "officially" engaged to my girlfriend this past weekend with the proposal and presentation of an engagement ring.  The big day is in May 2010.


As you can see, I'm not going to be able to afford splurging on model trains for quite some time.  ;D

Hmm. Interesting.  My wife was born in Illinois and has family there.  In fact, we'll be in Chicago on September 12th for a wedding.  However, I think members of my family and hers will be disappointed, if we elope and forgo the planned May 2010 wedding.

Now, back to train-related topics, since this just occurred to me.  I've never been to Chicago before, so I will do my best to find the time to do some railfanning on lines that I've never seen in person.  I can't wait!

Also, last weekend, I did get out and do some exploring of the rail line into Lewes, Delaware.  I have a few photos that I took that I will share on Thursday in this week's Proto Photo thread.

Seriously?!  Fort Miles is in Cape Henlopen State Park, and they've got some guns in there now that are quite impressive.  They were installed to defend the coast from enemy ships during WWII.  I found a pair of rails in a walking/bike trail that are deep inside the base and a long way from anything.  Check this out:



It would be cool to try to locate more of the abandoned line on the base.  My future in-laws have a book on Fort Miles and it shows the history of the base, including photographs of the barrels of some huge guns (e.g., 12" and 16"!) brought in on flat cars (one is easily identified as a PRR car).  I'll have some more on Thursday, showing the remaining active portion of the line through Lewes, including a small swing-span bridge.

SWEET!!!  I found the exact spot on the map where I came across the rails in the path in the picture above.  Nice.  I can't wait until I have the time to pour over the maps.

With all this jewelry rattling around, I almost forgot to commend Drew on his outstanding paint out...  The only suggestion would be to have faded the yellow before adding the grime.  Otherwise, it's just like I remember!

Dave, I'll actually be in Chicagoland that same weekend attending my 40th high school reunion in the burbs.

My wife and I were in downtown Chicago last weekend celebrating her 40th birthday--yeah same year--no wonder I'm not getting much modeling done

If you tell me what area you'll be staying in I may be able to give you a few railfanning tips--it is an awfully large city though, so there are alot of areas I don't know.  I've lived in Springfield the last 33 years which is 200 miles SW of Chicago.
