Dave,

I love the new yard.  Adding a yard on a 12" hollow core door was the best thing that could have happened to my door layout operationally, and I expect that you feel the same way after adding the yard to your layout.  In my case, I treated the layout as a point to point and operated from the yard to a second staging yard on the backside of my original door layout.  Out and back, that is.  How are you using yours, since you have the double track layout?

Also, as a huge fan of engine facilities, I look forward to the completion of yours, so that you can show off your nice fleet of locomotives, including your home-grown steamers.

Dave,

Since the yard's not finished yet (many contact ground throws yet to be wired/installed) I've just been using it as a scenicked staging yard.  The plan when done is to use it as an active staging yard (i.e., trains can be broken down and made up while waiting for a spin on the layout).  Depending on the direction of travel then the yard can be either Enola or Altoona.  Yes, unfortunately there will be unprototypical backup moves involved...  but so it goes until the "big one."

My sympathies to you, because I hate installing ground throws with contacts.  I just installed one on my new "dinky" layout tonight, and just don't feel like installing anymore tonight.  Ugh. It's really not so much the installation of the ground throw itself, because that's not so bad.  I'm using Ed K.'s method of recessing the throw to minimize it's visual impact.  That really helps with the looks.  Rather, it's the soldering of the numerous wires to the rails and that frog contact that I dread.  I'm not really bad at soldering, but it's fussy work and just not fun.  Fortunately, my new 2' x 3' layout will only have three turnouts, so I'm already one-third of the way home.  ;)

Keep up the good work,

Definitely agree. The only thing that would be better would be a laser cut Summerdale Diner :)

Okay, finished up the corner scene.  Lotsa pics.

That cinder lot is presumably from a business next door to the house.  The glue is still very wet in these scenes, so the haze & sheen is wet matte medium.

You can see PennDot has been trying to fix potholes on US 11/15.

Excellent Dave.  I like the treatment of the roadway - what techniques did you use?

Gotta love the mix of power in the yard there.  :)

The road is just a sheet of styrene from an old garage sale sign, spray painted with Testor's Dark Aircraft Gray.  The striping was hand-painted (using painter's tape as a mask) and the weathering is done by dragging my finger through black pastel dust and dragging it down the senter of each lane.  Dullcote completes the roadway.

An easy and effective technique that I'll have to remember in the future.

I like the blacktop patch too.  Nice work Dave!

Looks great Dave!

My only suggestion would be that if you really wanted to accurately model PA, you'd need to tear 11/15 up and add jersey barriers and a road crew.  :P
