Athearn new TOFC good for pre 60 ?

Just wondering , are any of the Athearn new TOFC's good in the late 50's decade ? Would also line to see the TOFC flats available without trailers . The side rails applied would save a step in modifying other flats for TOFC service .

I dare say the car looks good, but the trailer looks a tad modern...

If you're just looking at the paint, the M&St.L is good from '56 (when they started the red/white) to '60 (when they were taken over by the CNW).

As someone who's tried to build rub rails (serious pain in the you know what) before I love this car and agree that I'd be in for a bunch of flats without trailers..............

Interestingly, I could use the trailers, but not the flats !

What roadnames do you like ?  pm me - I've got these flats to get sell or trade !

ps - I think that 40 foot trailers became legal in 1958 ........... maybe some one can verify....

The trailers they model are 1960's models unfortunately. You can retrofit with CMW Aerovan's but the bad news is you have to spend money on the car and trailer to toss the trailer.

Geez , look at this shot , the rub rails are on the wrong side of the stakes . The tires would knock into the stakes as they rolled . Has anybody seen this setup on the prototype ? Has anybody seen rub rails on both sides of the stakes . Are the rub rails removable , and could it just be put on by an uninformed bloke ?

FWIW, my M&StL version had the rails correctly installed, but if you want to have a conversation about what's wrong with these cars.... ;)

Needs bridge plates .
Needs brake wheel notch so it can be lowered flush with deck .

What else is wrong ?

Details alone I think you only missed the deck risers that go next to the hitch.  A for the rub-rails, check your prototype.  Many of these (I don't mean GSC cars, just converted flats) cars were held over form the days before the use of the hitch and would have some sort of rail atop the rubrail for mounting tiedown hardware. (invented by the CGW  ;))

As for the M&StL version, I don't think either the flat or trailer are correct.

Athearn touted the GSC flat as ideal for trailer service due to it strength (or something like that) but I've not seen that played out for the mid-west roads.  They converted all types of trailers, least of which the GSC.  Part of this could be from the need to haul gypsum board which, I would guess, could be heavier than a trailer. There is a photo of a MSTL trailer on the back cover of one of the CNW books that show the number s-340.  I don;t know if these trailers should be similar but the one on the book is quite different and has only a single axle.  If anyone really wants info on the mstl version, I can get it through the yahoo group.

I haven't taken the time to see what hitch the model represents, but anything better than the MT version is welcome.


Hopefully others can speak to the other roadnames.

On page 103 of the GN Equipment Pictorial Book 2 there's a photo of a GN Chinese red flat set up just like the Athearn car pictured, with the posts on the inside and rail on the out. I can't see the interior of the set-up to know if there's a second rub rail on the inside though.

Just looking at the base plate... looks like the old long ACF Type 2
