I just received confirmation from Bill Shaumberg @ RMC.

celebrated his 45th wedding anniversary and a week and a half ago went to a
model RR convention. He really liked trains of all sorts, he had been around

Hal's fingerprints are all over the very fabric of this great hobby - he will be dearly missed.

We need a Model Railroader Hall Of Fame . Not the NMRA . Something else , something less bureaucratic , something that a forum that has no affiliations can pull off . It all can start with a sticky with an easy start up list of 10 or so . Then there could be votes of future " Rail Heads " to be added . It does not need approval of all folks across the world . This is OUR world Spanky , and we form it as we please .

He was here in Dallas/Fort Worth for the NMRA Lone Star Region convention.  Regretfully I was unable to attend.

I agree he was a great contributor and participant in our hobby.

Back in the late 60s / early 70s RMC ran a series of layout visits featuring an HO HW observation car painted up for Colonel Hal Carsten's Travelling Show (or something like that). Of course I was an avid RMC reader then (I still prefer the mag to the others).

I think Athearn offered an observation car (HW) decorated in this scheme. Walthers offered decals for the car in O, HO, and N (yeah, WKW at one time had a large N scale decal line).


(Looks almost like N scale now lol)

It will be interesting to see if RMC remains the stallwart of true railroad modeling that it's been under Hal's tutelage, or if the pointy headed bean counters will take over like at Kalmbach.

 Another Pioneer and giant in the industry is gone. I will really miss the"Notes from an old Timetable" column  from Hal that has been running in RMC in recient years. RMC has over the years become a far better magazine than the competition much more modeler oriented in my opinion. I sure hope this direction does continue. Nate Goodman (Nato). Salt Lake, Utah.
