Holy Sheetz, Batman!

As part of my "interchangeable era" strategy for the N scale Juniata Division, I want to have a replacement for the obviously 50s-era Gulf station for the Conrail 1980 era:



I'm thinking about having the gas station pop out to be replaced with a Sheetz.  Sheetz was around in the 70s and 80s, but I'm not sure what it looked like then.  I didn't often venture west of Harrisburg until 1992 when I went to Penn State and noticed the Sheetz near Lemont and in western State College.  Prior to that I knew only Turkey Hill.

My question for you guys is do you have any photos of Sheetz circa 1980?  I gather it was still red, orange, and yellow at the time...  I could wing it, but I want it to be believable.

Actually, I think there's a vintage Sheetz in Cumberland.  No gas pumps, though!

I have done CAD drawings for my laser for a 2000's era Sheetz and also the "Concept 4" Sheetz that was built on 17th ave in Altoona. I have not done any dtawings for a 90's models but they are similar to the 90's Cumberland Farms in the Notheast....for me its just a matter of finding time to spend on the laser cutting them ouit. I do plan on having several Sheetz and Cumbys on the new layout.

basically a white rectangle building with a red panel facade.  basically you can use a 7-Eleven and mod it to look like a Sheetz of that vintage.  the super and then mega stores happened much later.

the Sheetz in town in Huntingdon and in Mt. Union are the old style.  can't find pictures of them though.

Maybe the same Gulf Oil Station but closed down, devoid of pumps? That would be neat same town different era. When I travel through small PA towns I see what was once a thriving area, dulled down a bit -closed shops, rusting awnings etc.

Great info!  Looks like an easy scratchbuild. 

I agree w/ Lee in that I'd rather see something that's more specific to central PA than an abandoned gas station because it's important to me to establish a sense of locale...  Abandoned gas stations, though common in central PA circa 1980, could be anywhere.

Can't tell you how many people see my layout at shows and say 'That looks like West Virginia!" >
