worm gears on coreless motors

How does one go about finding the proper worm gear when re-motoring with a coreless motor?

I wouldn't think the motor would make any difference.  It just depends on the shaft size.  Shafts that are too small can be sleaved, too large, maybe the worm can be reamed.


I feel dirty.  :D

I've bought my Faulhaber motors from Motorman.  If you tell him what the final output diameter is of the shaft for the worm, he can supply sleeving and will even mount it on the motor shaft.  He's done about six for me.

I saw a blurb in a Z-Track magazine(we are selling a z-scale collection at the shop with some magazines) about somebody in Japan, Tiawan, or maybe Singapore making coreless motors usuable in some Z-scale equiptment. I'll try and find it tomorrow night and post the "poop" on them. If we want 5 volt DC motors that are tiny, there are thousands and thousands from the digital/tape video cameras available surplus for almost nothing! $3-10 range. Z-scalers are used to 12 and 9 volt motors already, so a 5 volt doesn't bother some of them. Google "micro-motors" and a couple of pages down you'll see some surplus houses that have these. Many have built-in tachometer pick-ups for speed control, and they'll slip down a soda straw(5.5mm dia. and smaller). Warning, these electronics surplus houses have terribly designed web-sites with tons of pop-up ads and stuff you don't want on your 'puter, so if you don't have effective anti-virus/firewall protection, don't go there. Finding what you're looking for on two of the sites(both in So Cal) is frustrating at the very best. You just have to page thru the sites, with 20 different products on a page. I'll go back and search out the two I found again and try and post thier web sites.

That's where I purchased  the motor.  I didn't realize he had sleeves.  What about NWSL if I need a new gear?

You have to match up the gear perfectly, the mesh and mod. I would use the original if you can. You can make you the sleeving yourself. using small brass tubing and the correct drill bit, or reamers. I have this set:

Usually for me the motor shaft end up being smaller than the hole in the worm.

What locomotive are you working with?

Thanks for the response.  I am trying to improve the Bachmann 0-6-0 switcher now that you can get all wheel pickup tenders.

Chances are the stock motor shaft is 1.5mm and the coreless motor is smaller (around 0.9mm). And it might be doubtful you would find a new worm to fit that. Most NWSL worms have standard size bores like 2 or 1.5mm. So even if you found a new worm you'd be in the same boat.

If you have calipers you can measure each shaft. And maybe something here will help:

I see a 1 to 1.5mm , 0.8 to 1.5mm, 1.5 to 2mm and .0.8 to 1mm adapters.

I still recommend the reamers even if you find the correct sleeve. You don't want the fit to be real tight, it should slide on with just a little force and then be tacked into place with ACC or Loctite.

"The Motorman" can get you this stuff as well, but sometimes he is hard to get a hold of I hear.
