Lee,
I'm a big proponent of starting new, a lesson from the V&O. It's also 'cause I can't stand that my Dad hangs onto portions of his old WM empire built in 1978, its totally obsolete (I even think the figures have abandoned shop).

I think a double deck is possible if designed properly, 12" on top 24" (-36") on the bottom, no center peninsula, 3 or 4 turn helix would fit to the left of the Westvaco Plant.

Finally I think you should go for a "feel" allowing you to keep industries you want and generate the traffic you feel sufficient for operations with/without justification of inclusion based on a selectively compressed prototype.

Regrettably, my room is totally unsuitable for a double/triple deck.

Oh hell, Lee, that's easy to resolve!  I've got two words for you: shed dormer.  ;D

I've got two more words for you... Historic District... :-\

Lock, you make an excellent point.  Maybe it's not that I would miss things that I currently enjoy, It's that I'm not seeing some of the aspects that I've learned about recently, or might enjoy more...  Someone posted a link to an aerial photo of the old PPG plant at Mexico Farms, and I almost got the crowbar out that night!...

In general, there's nothing fatal about my current design.  I'd like to fix the staging issues, which might be enough to take care of some of this dilemma, but I'll have to tear up so much to do that, I have to decide whether or not to go "all the way" with the remodel...

The East Sub has also always appealed to me, with it's rural nature, many industries along the line, and the helacious climb up the east slope of the Catoctins...

... I wonder how long it would take to dig out my crawls space to build a basement under the whole house? :P

And Brian, you've got seniority, so I really couldn't lay you off, anyway. Cheesy

Oh, I know exactly who you have in mind.  I'm the last to join so the first to go, right?  Boo!

No Dave, gulp, that would be me.

All right, Lee.  You've had a few days to ponder over this matter.  Where do you now stand on building the layout as planned on the other thread (e.g., Hagerstown Yard and the B&O interchange) versus starting completely over?

I'm remaining in a holding pattern... there are some other factors (beyond the layout room) that I'm pondering.

Okay.  I was running some trains last night, and I think I know what I need to do... (other than buy a sprawling rancher in the suburbs with a vast basement...)

The main hang up is the lack of a yard to represent the west end.  I'm trying to figure out how I can add that by extending the peninsula about 2'.  I need to be able to re-block trains so they can return eastbound from Elkins and/or Connellsville.  A visible, scenicked staging yard of about 6 tracks should do the trick.  I'm just not quite sure how to tie it in...  This would leave the bulk of the layout more less intact, and give me the necessary improvements for the west end traffic.

Stay tuned for developments...
