Bob, that is sooooo nice. Now build one in 1/48th scale so someone can use it to cut a die for a plastic version! Strangely, that is the normal procedure for cutting N-scale cars dies.

A painting question: would it make any sense to clean the entire kit (brass sheets) with acetone (or whatever) before assemby? Or is the benefit of cleaning netralized by the time and process of building the kit?

Build directly from the sheet and wait to do the cleaning afterwards. The oils on your skin will get on to brass anyway. Here is what I always tell anyone who asks:

1) Build
2) If you have any wayward CA, use a Q-Tip and acetone to remove CA, Glued skin, etc.
3) Clean with Lacquer Thinner and a soft brush. Do NOT use acetone if you used CA to assemble. Use gloves from now on while handling the model.
4) Surface etch in vineager for 30-60 sec
5) Rinse with warm water
6) Blow dry with hair dryer
7) Paint

Here is a tip I learned from Korean Brass, dunk the model into SUPER tinned paint to get paint into the hard to reach spots. Repeat if required. Spray as usual. This works really well for bridge columns, stockcar, etc where you are not able to spray.

Never Tuscan!!!! Only on passenger equipment!

Rob, not what the guys at Micro-Trains and Atlas say, or a guy in our club who used to be a tool and die maker for GM, so I don't know. Glen says CAD/CAM and tool and die making are totally different animals, and he can do both. People who restore steam engines to operate find "old fashioned" machinists to work off old blueprints for parts they need, and nobody CAM motorcycle head ports. It's all hand work done by metal artists. Same with RC motors. All the porting is hand work. The better the guy is, the more $$$ it costs.

Motorcycle parts are not model railroad models.  Most if not all of the major N scale manufacturers are working off of computer generated 3D models.
