i've been busy working out the various line side industries, station tracks, and interchanges that were active in 1967.  i'm not going to fit it all in, but there are more customers than i first thought.  now i just need to decide on what i can fit in my space to have enough places to setout cars and to get the feel of the through freight traffic.

Steve, I would suggest you take a stab at the first draft, that way we can see how you're thinking, then it's a matter of just massaging the details.

Otherwise it's a fee for service thing...

If I ever get a layout I ponder doing the eastern portion of the WM Baltimore to Hagerstown, Lee does Hagerstown and all points western...and all three of us model the same era...that could lend some interesting operations. Now we just need to figure out how to connect our RR's physically.... I wonder how many turns a helix would be to Lee's trainroom. Oh and there is that whole "Bay" thing we have to work out.

the MTL's won't go that far, they are underweight as it is and you can't get a good launch on a light car.

Maybe if you body-mount the couplers, those truck-mounted ones won't be flapping in the breeze, costing you a loss of aerodynamics and, hence, distance.  You might just be able to hit West Virginia.

Well it'd be more like a chunnel under the bay.... The insurance on the freight cars for planetary orbit gets pricey. Plus reentry is a bitch!

Here's some things that I really like about the schematic.
1) A modeled yard (classification and storage).
2) A staging yard (an offline destination and additional storage).   Can the staging yard go in the sump pump room, to save you space and help give a cleaner look to the layout with that portion out of sight?
3) Two interchanges (great for ops, because many types of rolling stock can be interchanged, as opposed to a warehouse that only receives boxcars, for example).  I also see runaround trackage at the interchanges.  I would recommend retaining this feature, in case selective compression starts taking over.
4) Plenty of industries ('nuff said).

Hopefully, you will be able to fit all of this in your track plan.  Have you figured out what space you are able to use in your layout room yet?  Also, are there any scenic features that you cannot do without, e.g., river crossings, tunnels, etc.?

no tunnels and the bridges are nothing special on this part of the railroad.  the most scenic bridge is in Phillipsburg, west of Hudson Yard and will not be modeled.  the landscape runs from rolling farms to steep ridges near Franklin and then back to rolling farms again.

i will not be able to fit all that is on the schematic into my current space.  if space was not an issue, i would build the schematic as presented, and would probably add another siding and 3 more line side industries.

i don't think it will fit in 19x8.5, but you are welcome to try 

Hudson Yard and the staging yard can be the same if a point to point plan does nto work.  i would prefer that the staging be visible.  it need only be 4 tracks...
