Seriously, you've made some good suggestions for what Steve's space can offer.  I agree, the space needs to dictate the benchwork, and the benchwork needs to dictate the layout plan.  That's exactly where I am on my new layout plan.  I'm still deciding what realistic space I have.  I think Steve is against building a double deck layout, although, back at the Timonium show, he told me that I had to build a double deck layout, notwithstanding my objection to building a monster.  Go figure.

sorry - i've been swamped with work (go figure) and had a board meeting for my radio club.  i've been busy researching and have found out some valuable information which leads me to want to make some modifications to my plan.  i won't be able to make the land grab after all, well, not as large a grab as stated without building in front of the unused fireplace (heat vaccum).

i'll weigh in more later - very busy

the red is the mantle and the hearth is McDonald's red tile (fookin ugly).  the hearth is raised about 8 inches.  we never use the fireplace because it sucks all the heat out of the house - it is not vented and there is no rear damper, just a flue door.  i do have an insert stove (that can also burn coal) on the patio that i got for free - it needs too much work and thus the reason it's outside, but i digress...

Since you asked Lee.... If it were me I'd have two helii on either end of "Open to rest of Family Room". Leave the walkway open between the helii, with nice smooth curves of the facia to give it almost a psuedo entrance look. I'd lose the pier in the middle it takes away from the "flow" while moving with a train, opting for something more of a bulge with curved facia. Additionally I'd have smooth curves opposed to hard angles along the edges of the layout.

But wait!  Would that solve the fireplace conundrum? I think not...  I think a single helix up is the short answer.  He could easily add a balloon track at the end, which could, in effect, serve as another staging point.  I believe he was mumbling something about some branch line that he wanted to include...  I'll have to look at my trusty L&HR map to see what the operating schematic would be for this arrangement...

the main LDE's are as follows:


Greycourt, NY - interchange with the EL (Erie).  train order office


Warwick Yard - home base for L&HR engine terminal and shops and local classifying.  dispatcher and train order office



Franklin, NJ - a siding and commercial track were just to the east of the Ogdensburg branch (former Hanford branch of NYS&W) to the Sterling Hill mine.  the NYS&W cross the L&H at this point but the diamond was removed in the 1950's when the Hanford branch was abandoned. the Sussex branch of the DL&W was long gone as was the wye by the 1960's.

Sterling Hill zinc mine - source of daily traffic west to CNJ interchange at Allentown


Sparta Junction - interchange with the NYS&W - the NYS&W ended just to the west a tad and was embargoed in 1968.  train order office

Great Meadows - cool looking station - train order office

Belvidere - PRR's "G" tower - where the L&H trackage starts - train order office

Hudson Yard - 4 track yard next to PRR Bel-Del line

can't have them all in my limited space, but it would be nice to have a few.

Greycourt is a must... it would be your gateway out of staging.  I remember studying that interchange when it appeared in RMC a million or so years ago.  I doubt that I still have that edition...

Warwick would be your key base of operations, and primary yard.  I would strive to work in the shop buildings, since they are somewhat iconic...

Franklin/Ogdensburg Branch. could be truncated to enough track to make it function on the layout, and positioned at the foot of the helix, which would be the branch to the Zinc mine.

The rest I would try to work in as best as I could, maybe or maybe not in geographically correct order.

that is the remains of the L&H turntable.  Hill siding was in about the location of the tracks seen in the aerial image.  this was the original terminus of the L&H predecessor the Warwick Valley Railroad.

i'm staying with the L&HR.  i'm just trying to come up with a layout that captures the feel of the prototype and offers some operational fun. 

but i will tell you, the NYS&W has some interesting locations that would be fun to model...
