Weeekend Update - 2/22/2009

Got a couple of projects through the paint shop this weekend.  I had some ancient, and as it turns out pretty badly done silk screened decals for Reading and CNJ cabooses.  These don't look bad under the 3' away rule, but you better take off your glasses to look at these photos...

i'll help you out - i'll take them off your hands and file off all the rivets and turn them into L&HR cabins.  that should solve the 3' rule problems.

I am about 2/5^ths of the way through my B&O RDC project. Subbing proto photo's till next week (hopefully).

9914 needs rear heralds...

Also picked up an Walthers 0-8-0 in L&N for the excursion fleet, then pulled a Gettysburg run via Union Bridge and Blue Ridge Summit making the appropriate stops. While at the Histerical Society I picked up the WM in Color Vol. II, the Cabeese Book w/ Corrections, as well as the McFall Boxcar book. So it was a good train filled weekend.

I've been working on some more of those H-21 hopper rebuilds... I've got some extra decals, would you like some for a swap for those RDC decals you gave me?  I meant to have them out for you last weekend...

Building the cars themselves can be kind of expensive, it takes two to make one car, however, if you buy 55T shells from the Atlas parts department, that cuts it down to about one car plus $3.  (the weight, details and trucks only come from one car.)

Lee: I see the ACI label is directly on the stripes; now; not knowing exactly how the ACI labels worked; but assuming it's an optical scan of some primitive format, I would nevertheless have thought that placing them beside other graphic elements like horizontal stripes might have confused scanners that were already "confused".....did the WM really do this ?

Yes, photo references show the ACI label located as shown, as well as in the space between "WESTERN" and "MARYLAND" as well as at other random locations on the car sides.

Well 9918 was an Ex-Santa Flush unit #901. They couldn't get the paint off of it so they doused her in blue and yellow so she's a rare-bird. I've seen photographic evidence as late as 1971. The rest of the RDC's were all stainless. All B&O RDC's went to MARC so they lasted in their native paintschemes quite awhile.

Decals you say...?



Working on the second and third sets of decals right now, -second being C&O Passenger Cars (generic). About the only thing left for the B&O RDC decals is maybe a darker brass color for the heralds, and white numberboard numbers.

Ya, I'd read that too, but it didn't mention anything about the field in which the label was place - being in the printing and graphics business we seem to spend a lot of time putting optical cut marks and bar codes as far away form contaminating graphic elements as possible so I wondered about ACI labels being the same....guess not.

It's an ALPs printer, I send my artwork off to a fellow forum member Helviticarr to print it off. His stuff is really top notch printing work.

I had the same guy do my Quaboag Transfer, and Quincy Bay Terminal decals. The black and white decals sit really well on the model. The yellow.... not so much.

Anyway, I got the last few shot for two new articles finished. First out will be a short peice on making a Phase III GP9. Then the SW1500 article. Other then that, I have been weathering a few cars, weathering a MofW CSX geep for a friend and detailing an O scale GP15.

Got to go to the Denver Train Show this Saturday, which was cool.

Got to spend Sunday at the vet's -- my dog broke her right front leg.  Not cool.
