1955-1958 Black, Gold Lettering "Norfolk And Western" spelt out
1958-1963 Black, dulux gold (yellow) lettering spelt out and medallion
1963-1966 Black, as above, but half-moon (hamburger) medallion
1966-1970 Blue, hamburger medallion, spelt out lettering
1970 U30B's 8465-8515 delivered in black with hamburger (same as 63-66 scheme)
1970-71 Black, Dulux Gold N&W serif initials & Hamburger logo, lots of variations
1971-1981 Black, Block "NW" scheme.
1981 "Skunk" scheme on 3x GP38AC, white horizontal stripe with Norfolk And Western in black.

The final scheme, which started December 1981 (same time as the "skunks"), was used until 1984. NS did not decide on a NS paint scheme until 1984.

When were the redbird GP-9's in there, and how about the red SD40 and Uboat?  I know these weren't a commonly applied scheme, but it was mighty tasty...

the tuscan SD-40 and Uboat units were for the company varnish - not sure about the redbird's - think they were done in 57 and were for passenger service

Red Bird passenger GP9s 500-521 were 1958-Jan 1966, when they began to be painted blue. Originally with the script herald, then with hamburger starting late 1963.

Emd SD40-2 6175 was delivered in red with "white" "NW" lettering summer 1978. N&W quickly repainted the lettering into "gold"

GE C30-7 8010 was delivered in red with "gold" in fall '78 and then 8076-8080 also were delivered in 1979 w/red paint and "gold" "NW" lettering.

6175 and 8010 were used on company varnish as well as in regular service. Not sure if 8076-8080 were ever used for varnish.

But I really liked the "NW" scheme especially when it first appeared - it looked great in fresh black paint on a big high nosed loco. Few photos that I've seen convey this well.

The late 70s "Reds" are great too.

Hard to choose. The N&W was a pretty classy road... yes, there is an elegnce is the simplicity of it's image (and it's rich coffers).

I have always admired the N&W, and if I wasn't a Canuk and interested in CN & CP, N&W would be a powerful draw. A money maker you can admire with an interesting assortment of power. It kicked some butt. I'd be looking at the late 1970's to the darkness of 1984. I love those ex WAB F7's, hope a few were still running in that timeframe.
