What F unit to use- tired of waiting

OK,
I don't post very often, but I have a problem.  I want some CGW F-Units.  Actually F7's.  not F3's. But IM is taking too long, and I am figuring that I Will have to repaint them into the Red or maroon Dip scheme anyway. 

So I figure I will just take the plunge, and buy another roads, as long as they meet specs, and then paint..

So I am looking for F7's that would pass for CGW.  Ie.. need dual head light.  (Mars preferred, and have winterization hatches.)  I have hooked at the IM sight and it is hard to tell who has this mix.  Any help.

I am fairly certain IM will supply an undec shell if you contact them and explain what you want. I'm not sure what they'd charge for the shell though.

Well , I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but the CGW didn't have any F7 A units besides 153, 155, 156. And those would require removing the Dynamic Brake fan.

IM makes shells with or without dynamic brake fans.

You are right (nfcn100), but they did have a bunch of F7B units.  The count I have is: F3A (28), F3B (15), F7A (3), F7B (18), FP7 (2).  Plus the earlier F3A had the Chicken wire grills.  So really is think I can get by with F3A units and then just shop for the right looking B units.  Thanks... I would like to be able to do at least 2 5+ unit mash ups.

Yep.  If you want to use an IM unit just look for one with a blanked out Dynamic Brake hatch.  I haven't tried to strip one yet so I'd love to hear how it goes.  The Kato units just require some filing and sanding.  There is a little 'dip' when you're done that you can try to fill but doesn't show anyway if you weather the roof. Just make sure you protect the rivets along the edges of the hatch.  It doesn't take more than one swipe to loose them.

Yes, they a had 19 F7B's (by my count).

Several with steam generators (I think all of the 116's but I'd have to double check). 

As for F3A's, a lot depends on the year you plan to represent as to what road numbers/body styles/paint colors are viable.

I'm not kidding....in the winter - spring of 1969- 1970 4 CGW F3's were leased to the Canadian Pacific Railway in a very serious power shortage........so "it's not my railway".... it's the truth.....no doubt you doubt me so please see the Morning Sun Book "Trackside in Niagagra Peninsula... page 56"................

And as for the black roof; I am aware of it; the original pictures from the aforementioned book did not show the roof; further research showed the grevious error..................I will make sure that I do not insult the CGW community any further...........after all; they are a knowledgeable bunch..............reagrdless; the repair is on my list of things to do.

I'm not a big rivet counter anyway.  But accuracy is good, but since I am going to do a Alternate History No Merger CGW maybe they did make it into Canada more often.  Afterall it did have a Maple leaf as an earlier logo.

Jeff; those are Kato F3's, duel headlight type, with a Miniatures by Eric winterization hatch on the (yet unpainted, but well weathered) roofs. The pic's I had showed no MU's on the pilot; I didn't adda firecracker antanna (didn't have one) and I missed the "extra" flags.....They run very well.

I don't doubt that EX-CGW units were leased/sold to any road.  In fact in 69' (or so) MKT bought EX-CGW units from Precision Engineering to trade into EMD on an order for GP40's.

I'll have to dig a bit but I have a list of most of the units leased to CP from 1964-1995, it's a interesting mix to say the least... I'll post it in another thread when I get the chance.

Ryan: The photo was taken 27 years to the day before you were born....? 1970 plus 27 years is 1997.... you are 12 years old....? ......if so, I am very impressed with your knowledge of trains and your writing ability..... ;D I'm guessing you ment 17 years........or maybe my math needs remedial help.

The CPR leased some pretty odd stuff......I loved the IC C636's - orange and white with Action red..... quite the vision in colour !
