Thinking about changing around the layout some

I'm probably gonna redo the "industry" half of the layout with a yard, because I like them!

No real ops plan, but at least somewhere to hold all the projects underway.

What do you all think?

I agree, yards are a great way of keeping rolling stock visible, and showing off work. On my WR&N I used to keep rotating stuff through the yard so it was always changing, which keeps up interest--mine as well as visitors'. You might be able to squeeze a smaller industry or two back in, or maybe shift a couple toward the other end of the layout. Hard to say... maybe you could provide some overall shots and/or a plan?

How about a mirror under that overpass to stretch the yard?

So I was just looking into getting the track for this project, and HOLY CRAP! When did turnouts jump in price? The last time I had seen them, Atlas #5s were going for $7.99 at MBK, but have jumped to $9.99 now! I knew Atlas had a price increase, but that's 25%. Wow!

I had thought about that, but engine facilities don't usually just show up outside of a large yard, and the whole space really isn't oriented toward that type of thing, even with it "off layout".

small yard is fine without engine services. - look no further than Hancock on the former B&O or Conrail at Lewistown.

You need to find some yard tower or office that just screams Conrail and plant it in the middle of all those tracks. I also agree about mirrors, you can get some pretty small first surface mirrors that will fit under the bridge.

I like it.  Great idea.

You could probably get away with just a single MoW track to park MoW equipment...  Rusty yellow X29s were found as late as the mid 80s on CR.  Get yourself the MT one:



I think a yard is an awesome idea.  It's a scenic opportunity as much as it is an operational opportunity.

Ed, looks like you've got enouigh room to have a yard and still leave some industry. The remaining industry helps to justify the existence of a yard. Remember, railroads didn't put in a yard because someone said "gee, a yard would look good here", and tended to allow them to become overgrown with weeds if no longer in use. As far as engine service, get a small tank truck, paint it whatever color CR used and fuel your engines using it. PRR used COE Whites painted tuscan red, maybe one was still around in 1985, but I doubt it.
