I actually saw a Conrail boxcar with a roof walk back in the early 90's.  I took a photo of it to prove it did exist.  I thought it was a 50' plug door boxcar of EL heritage, a BE55B I think.  It was painted in full Conrail dress, not a painted out EL.  I don't have my Conrail color guide with me, but isn't the car Athearn is modeling in it?  A class BE50 something.  These are the "Feed Loading Only" cars.  I have a slide I bought at a train show 15 years ago with a different number.  Maybe I will email Athearn to suggest this as a second prototypical number.  If they ignore me, I will renumber their second car myself.  As far as the roofwalk goes, I thought they are easily removed from the Athearn car.  You just need to file down the "grab iron" that protrudes through the roof walk above the side ladder.  Not a big deal.  I'll sign up for these cars if I find them to be accurate.  I'm always looking to add prototypically accurate cars to my Conrail fleet.  It would be nice to see these in full EL paint also.  Thanks.

i'm gonna say probably.

I'll have to check the number against the class, but WM started getting 50' boxes in the late 1940's, and started applying the speedlettering in 1954-55, so generally I'd say yes.  However, I don't think the DF designation was applied until the mid 1960's.

Needless to say, there will be a few of these rolling around on my layout pending the approval of the AFE...

Well....

The re-released (in HO) ex-MDC double door (centred) FMC cars are all foobie paint schemes. The CPAA/Procor and BC Hydro cars were actually PC&F cars (of which there is no model), and the rest apparently had a different inside height, according to discussions on the Modern Freight Cars List (MFCL) on Yahoo.

Unfortunately, the SAL's were built in 1962, The WM's have a New date of 4-63 but a Lube date of 8-29-61. Nothing jives there. The Southerns were built in '59 but have a stencil date an data box for the late 70's. Every scheme is later except for the D&RGW which has a 1954 build date and soem sort of reweigh or work date of 1977, I didn't think a scheme like that surviuved into the late 70's.

This is their only N scale offering this month and there weren't very many HO offereings either.

These had the same etched roof walks under MDC.
