de-waxing MMM trucks

Just curious, anyone have any MMM truks laying around? Has anone tried to boil the vehicles in water to remove the wax?

No, but I do know that they EXPLODE if you try to cut them with snippers and if you paint them with non-waterbase paint they never dry.

(of course they warn you not to do this, but who follows instructions)

Got a few sitting in a drawer waiting until a block of spare time when I'm in a really good mood to deal with them. I am going to give rubber cement thinner a try. Rubber cement thinner very effectively dissolves wax as well as sticky substances such as label adhesives. The test will be to determine if the fused material can withstand the solvent. I'll give it a quick try tonight after work.

MMM Vehicles contains a liquid core, which if exposed due to rupture
should not be touched, inhaled, or looked at.

Do not use MMM Vehicles on concrete.

Discontinue use of MMM Vehicles if any of the following occurs:

* Itching

* Vertigo

* Dizziness

* Tingling in extremities

* Loss of balance or coordination

* Slurred speech

* Temporary blindness

* Profuse Sweating

* Heart palpitations

If MMM Vehicles begins to smoke, get away immediately. Seek shelter
and cover head.

MMM Vehicles may stick to certain types of skin.

When not in use, MMM Vehicles should be returned to its special container
and kept under refrigeration.

The rubber cement thinner trick seems to have worked, at least based on look and feel. The acid test, of course, is in the painting, which I'll get to at some point. In the image, the top trailer is as delivered; the bottom one received a thorough rubber cement thinner bath, which required scrubbing with a small, stiff paint brush before it looked clean. A brief soak in the thinner (~1 minute) did not seem to have adversely affected the fused acetate.

Are you guys saying that the models are covered in a layer of wax? Is the wax what stops paint from drying???

What I don't understand about MMM is that there are a hell of a lot of things that can be realisticly rendered using their current technology (like concrete), so why do they insist upon rendering stuff that is supposed to be curvy and shiny?

 Who is MMM and what else do they make in N other than the trailer ?
 Why would they wax 'em ?
 Do they all come unpainted and waxed ?

What I don't understand about MMM is that there are a hell of a lot of things that can be realisticly rendered using their current technology (like concrete), so why do they insist upon rendering stuff that is supposed to be curvy and shiny?

This is a good idea.  I would let them know, maybe they haven't considered it yet.

They could do abutments, cold storage buildings, even art deco-style building facades.

The wax supports the model as it is built. They use a rapid prototyper, but nowhere near as nice as M4D's

I love MK4D stuff. I am still waiting for their reefer for my juice train. I have six of their high cube and waffle car. I use floquil, and they dry in like a normal paint job. The only thing you cant do is cut them. They will break in unpredictable places.
