Been working on my coil car:

Tom, this is without question the best rust work I have ever seen on any model....hands down!

And finally, I in the right mind set to mask the Kato NW-2 that I had added louvers to a while ago to make a phase IV version.  The Tamiya tape did a great job over the bulky louvers.

But seriously, it's an HO scale model from Walthers.  I got two for $25 from Chulvis and had to spend about an hour drilling holes for all the grabs.  The Harbor cover will make an appearance in my upcoming weathering book.

Oh, and Carl, this has been finished for a few weeks now, it just finally got up to the top of the list for photographing. ;D

Actually, no.  I've been in discussions with some early reviewers and have a few more things to write and take/redo a few more photographs.  I was also encouraged to shoot for a September release to capitalize on the Fall modeling surge.  I also had to migrate all the photos and text from Pages to InDesign.

I think it's unfair that Tom is the only one to have a shrinking machine and can set it to any scale he wants. Enough is enough Tom, where can the rest of us buy one?

I've been experimenting with lighting to see what the best set-up is going to be and how much money I may need to spend.  Right now the biggest cost is a good softbox so I've played around with some home diffusers.



You can compare that to the one I posted earlier.

Ideally, I need a quick setup that I can use the lights I already have.  I'm hoping something like this will be good enough for publication (got to lose the shadow on the right end).

I built and decaled this a few years ago. I found it stashed in a box so I lightly weathered and gave it some minimal underbody details. Guess it's a 'runner' now:

Tom: that coil car is looking great - as always you got the colors right on and the rust looks great.

The fam was out of town, so it was a productive hobby weekend. 

First, I installed my CraigsList free table legs on the layout.

I think I need a wider footprint though, so there's more work to be done.

Then I finished up my F45.   This guy is from the days before Athearn or Grants F45 shells.  Old school Lima FP45 chopped up.  I finally got my decoder in and the SMD LED hooked up.


If you look close you can see the LED in there.

Then, I finished up a bunch of my manual ground throw switches.

I spent the week plotting and planning. I'm no longer modeling ATSF and am going back to modeling VA/WV. I'll post the track plan later.

A little late but here it is.
I just finished a Bowser HO scale Conrail G39a ore jenny,that I bought at the CRHS RBQ Saturday.
Before you say big whoop, remember this was put together by a guy who's kit building skills consists of screwing an old bluebox Athearn kit together.
Quite a proud moment for me as I didn't get frustrated,and screwed something up.
I was tempted to pull a Tom Mann and weather the hell out of it,but I refrained and left it as is.
As this kit turned out so well,I'm tempted to build a whole fleet of these cars.
I wonder if Bowser makes 'em in Penn Central.
