Weekend Update - 11 May 2008

Happy Mothers Day - You probably didn't do much with the special weekend .. but lets see them anyway.

For me, I completed all the roadbed of my rebuilt section, and laid down 50 sections of cork .. I need to get another case of cork, then track work starts ..

I was able to work on a couple of project this weekend.

First was fitting the spring like worm gears from the arnold S2 onto a new motor.  I used a combination of what the Motorman provided and some hand turned brass with the drill.



Next was a REM Bantam crane.  I didn't like the way the arm pieces folded together so I cut them apart and soldered them together instead.  Unfortunately I flipped a couple pieces over so the bracing runs the same way on the top and bottom.  I was going to use this as a flat car load, but it'll probably be too heavy.  So it'll get saved for a future junk yard scene which means I need to get a magnet for it.  I also drilled a hole down the center if I want to animate it later on.



And finally, I in the right mind set to mask the Kato NW-2 that I had added louvers to a while ago to make a phase IV version.  The Tamiya tape did a great job over the bulky louvers.

I ordered some boxcars to add to the fleet, Trainman PS-1 40' cars.  Both numbers-WM, a CP Pac Man, and a CNJ.  Should have them in hand mid week.  The paper mill eats a lot of 40 cars for outbound loads, so I felt the need to beef up the fleet a bit.

Other than that, nuttin.

I reorganized the model room.  I was running out of work space, particularly when needing to pull out any power tools or the like.  I'd have to clear up so much of the work space I was sometimes having a hard time remembering in what container I placed what parts when I moved them.  So I brought in a spare desk and moved the spray booth between the two.  The space will be even more welcome come time to work on the large structures which would have continually gotten in the way.

I've also decided to increase the size of the benchwork.  I was having a hell of a time fitting any sort of decent continuous running in my former plan, so I'll be adding a few extra feet and using 2 walls of the room, rather than just 1.  Even with the change, I should be able to use the benchwork that's in progress in the garage.

Me, I just sold a whole bunch of stuff on eBay so I can afford some more stuff and maybe actually get something accomplished. I placed an order for an M-T Z scale F7B that I plan to power and join with an F7A, and paint in the blue & yellow CNJ scheme and weather along these lines:

Here is a couple of pics on a bridge that I am building for myself. It is a double track thru truss and what you see is one half of it. Anyone can follow along in the build as this is the bridge I am using for the latest "How To" on my site.

I did get a little done now that I bought a decent mask for painting. Weathered four PRR circle keystone boxcars, two DI, and two Atlas USRA rebuilds. Glosscoted and added the hazmat placard boards to the Mobilgas MTL special run from BLW, but not the placard decals yet. MR and Trains came Thursday so I spent a little time reading them.  :-[

My weathering is not Tom Mann quality, but with over 300 cars will be looking for a train effect rather than photos of individual cars blown up to ten times actual size!

I'd like to announce that after viewing Tom's coil car I will be leaving N scale and taking up cross stitching; scrap booking or maybe trying to make the alternate position on the Canadian Boche' ball team for the 2012 Olympics...... you shouldn't show me those Tom... I'm gettin a freakin complex..!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

But before I chose to quit this wretched hobby ( thanks Tom... really !) I started a Canadian Pacific HW Baggage car....



I know... the #^%$%$@$ doors...........what moronic railway has panel dors on a baggage car ? - oh ya... the CPR

The problem is those @$$#@! doors. Lee (WM Lee) and I have been bashing our heads together trying to think of a better way... I have changed them tonight but they still are not what I want.....

Leave it to bunch of dumb Canucks to make a door that....um... ah... well... nevermind.. eh ?

Nothing train related this weekend.  Besides being mothers day, I attended my youngest sons college graduation.  At least I did get a change to use my new Nikon D-40 camera.  Will be taking some rails shots next week when I head up to PA.

Here is my week's work still in-progress: a pair of B&P GP9's I've redone into W&P with a little basic weathering started.  Still need to future the numberboards (and 1802's are missing), reinstall the glass, replace the horns (both roof mounted), and try a little more weathering (mostly on the roof).  Plus I see a bit of cleanup I need to do as well.

I'd like to make the louvers a little more prominent (as with the prototype), so I'm going to try an acrylic wash I think.
