Bachmann Steam: Are these any good?

I've been wanting to try out some steam.. but don't want to spend a bundle just yet.

Are these decent runners?  I plan on converting to DCC..

I've seen these in person, and aside from the motor's a$$ hanging out the cab, they don't look too bad.  I believe they have an improved drive and pick-up based on the spectrum designs.  Not sure how DCC friendly they are, though.

I'd spend a little more and grab a B-mann Spectrum consolidation.  They are decent runners and will convert to DCC fairly easily.

I was able to bag one (2-8-0) for about $45 delivered. Very nice loco even if it is slightly oversized.

I agree, if it is not of the Bachmann Spectrum Line,give it a wide berth..

But, in defense of the 0-6-0.... while it may not look great with the motor sticking out of the cab, it is a very smooth runner, quiet, has pick-up on the lead tender truck in addition to the drivers, and makes it over ALL of my switches.  While I agree the Spectrum line is good, this loco, as well as the 4-8-4, have seemed to benefit from the Spectrum line.  At under $40, it is a good buy.

I'm in the -these are not so good- camp. I own the 0-6-0 and unlike absnut, mine is one of my worst runners. I consider it a toy in every sense. For a few dollars more, you can buy a MP Pacific and they are much better IMO. I own a MP Pacific and Mikado - the Mikado hasn't been great for me (seizing connecting rods) but I've had no problems with the Pacific. The Pacific will also perform better on tight radius curves - the Mikado doesn't do well on turns under r12" or so.

As others have mentioned, the Bachmann Spectrums are good too but cost a bit more.

I own 4 of the Bachmann Spectrums. All beautiful runners. Spend the couple of extra bucks on a Spectrum. You won't regret it !
