Hi everyone, I'm Dan from Colorado. Newly retired; been a modeler all my life and was an N scaler in earlier years pre-kids -- back when Rapido couplers and poor-running engines were the rule. Just getting back into the hobby with a small door layout. Scenery and structures are my favorite part of the hobby. Currently coming up to speed on N-Possible couplers which is what brought me to this forum; really appreciate all the expertise.

Hello, I'm Larry from Idaho.

Empty nester who got back into the hobby after a 20+ year hiatus. The first grandkid arrived and wanted to expose her to the world of trains. At least that's what I told myself (and my wife).

Building an around the room layout loosely based on south central Kansas in the 80's. The changes to the hobby and industry continue to amaze.   

Attended the NSE in KC this past year and am looking forward to Milwaukee in June. Will be headed to Florida for an RPM in January via Amtrak. Gotta make up for lost time I guess.

I'm a frequent lurker soaking in the knowledge. Really appreciate all of those that share.

Hi all, my name's David, split my time between SW Florida and SW Ohio. Ran an HO setup back in the 1970s and my wife has suggested that I get back into trains so I don't devote all of my time to tinkering with vintage spinning reels. I am still researching but thing N Scale may be my best bet due to limited space. It's fun learning about all of the modern designs and whatnot.

Welcome David, N scale has a ton to offer.  I model in Z scale myself but they're both good in their own ways.  As an older guy, I can say Do yourself a favor and get an Optivisor (if you don't already have one for the work on reels).  Save those eyes!

Guess I should have posted here first...but hey there!

I'm Andy... retired Coast Guard Senior Chief after 25 years in the service. Started N scaling back in 2000 while in Alaska, then stopped all of it for about 15 years. Just now getting back into things, and have decided to model the Death Valley Railroad in N scale.

The DVRR was a narrow gauge mining railroad that ran between the wye at Death Valley Junction where it tied into the Toponah and Tidewater standard gauge line, out about 20 miles to the mining town of Ryan, where borax was mined from the mountainside.

Already have a bunch of rolling stock, and have been printing up some ore cars, but still have lots of questions and getting a LOT of help here already.

Hey everyone,

Southern PA modeler, turning 40 this year, have a 10 year old that has caught the bug after seeing my father's 20+ year dormant layout in his basement which has thrust both of us back into the fray. Dad has bee pleasantly surprised with all the new tech and increased detail *he is a stickler for true to life* Mostly modeling later 90s and early 2000s rolling stock with a leaning toward B&O OML and WMRR. Will start a build thread with updates as soon as I snap some pictures. Dad and I started building "The dream layout of the 90s" from a Model Railroader issue from 1992 if I remember correctly. Life caught up as my sister and I aged and the layout hadn't been touched since early 2002 when dad installed a Lenz control system. Fast-forward, we are now Digitrax and he has tore up about a third of the existing roadbed when I proposed the question "How do you see yourself operating the layout when its finished?" We are adding more industry for future switching operations as well as maintaining the twin track highspeed loop. Look forward to interacting with everyone, sharing knowledge and growing the hobby!

@SnacktwnNScaler welcome aboard! As @davefoxx notes you and your dad are in good prototype and geographic company. We have a LOT of Railwire denizens in the DMV and a few sprinkled in Pennsylvania as well. And if you are indeed an n scaler, the Altoona n scale weekend needs to be on your radar.

Joined the forum today

I have been in N scale for almost 2 years now.

I started when I moved to japan as it's way cheaper and more easily accessible compared to france.
I own mostly TGVs (all kato) and a few other stuff  as well (mostly french or japanese)
I started a youtube channel about model trains while in japan.

unfortunately I had to move back to Paris last month. (still managed to buy quite a lot of trains and tracks before leaving)

I do not have a layout yet but I did joined a club near Paris (AARP)

Hiya folks! My name is Melanie from California.

I've been tinkering with models and trains since the 1970s, mostly HO, but have working in N scale for the past 30-years. There were tons of brick & mortar shops at that time (Long's Drugs, All Aboard, etc.), but sadly have gone the way of the dodo.

I'm currently fleshing-out an idea for an N scale Tehachapi plan with multiple levels, and best of all, at least IMHO (and being retired), it'll be walk-in without the need for duck or crawl-unders.

Although my fondness is for Cajon Pass, and that I love all things SP and Santa Fe, Tehachapi, or at least a facsimile of it, is now my go-to. All of this will be built in a 16' x 24' shop.

Hmm – two routes that have been done to death.

At any rate, for the life of me I couldn't remember my previous login here, so it seemed a good idea to forego the hassle and start fresh.

I’m Dan from Central California. I’ve been modeling off an on since grade school and switched from HO to N back in 2016 or 2017. Ill be retiring from a career in public safety in about 3 years and will likely move to Oklahoma where I’ll raise some cows, fly back to California to work wildfires in the summers as a contractor, and build the BNSF Gateway Subdivision (and maybe the Oregon Trunk) in N Scale!
