@Ed Kapuscinski lives near Towson, Maryland, but I’m in Hockessin, Delaware (close to Pike Creek).

Well, not dangerous if you are using a multimeter to determine the resistance value before you connect the LED, as well as after you adjust the resistance for the desired brightness.  I always do that to be sure I have turned the resistance up all the way for the contact points I am using before I start.  With 3 contacts, the resistance between the center and one end is the full value of the resistor, while the resistance between the center and the other end is zero (or close to it). So, make sure you measure the resistance in the circuit before applying the voltage, to be sure it is the max value of the variable resistor.

Well, if your fingers slip, you could accidentally turn it too far.  Besides, having the additional resistor means that there is never a worry about having the variable resistor set to zero ohms.  I rather be safe than sorry, especially since the protection is very easy to add. I guess we all think differently.

Ed’s a bit more south but Dave you’re right around the corner. I’m in Meadowood right behind Walgreens off Kirkwood.

And don't forget this needs to fit in that tender alongside the speaker too.

Ed, this variable resistor jig is for bench-testing your LED's brightness using the variable resistor, then using the value of that tester for selecting a standard single resistor to be  installed with the LED in your model. The variable resistor will never reside  inside the model.   You might want to read through Maletrain's post  again.

The whole debate on common knowledge is funny to me. Because I had similar issues when it comes to installing Keep Alives. Yeah finding vids for a specific common model and decoder telling you where to go is quick and painless. Like finding a Jimmy DIY vid or Steve's trains on an Atlas GP15 or Kato Pocket with Digitrax. But its like pulling teeth trying to find nuts and bolts info on what to look for in a more general sense when you have old chassis or weird drop in decoders and you just need to find where to tap the leads on.

And then this is compounded by personalized algorithms that might  all tell us completely different things with an identical search.

For the record, I definitely did NOT trust the Google AI summary.

I've done enough work using GenAI to know when and when not to trust it (never, actually, you should never trust GenAI, but you should still use it).

Yep, like Dave said, Towson MD, just off 695. Do you ever get down this way?
