KATO Amfleet 1 & 2 in Phase 3

Really wish they'd do some "Rainbow Era" E8 paint outs from '71/'72. Would allow for a lot of east coast paint schemes to come into play, ACL, B&O, L&N, SBD, SOU etc. But its not in Kato's M.O. for mismatched/unclean stuff.

The few SDP40F's that did receive Phase III paint did not have HEP, just HEP through cables and were only used for traction like the GP40's that Amtrak leased from Helm in the early 1990's.  This photo likely shows the Valpo Dummy that ran in push-pull mode with an HEP equipped locomotive on the other end (F40PH, P30CH, or one of the ex-PRR E8's rebuilt with HEP before the first F40PH's showed up).  Also note the Phase I paint on the ex-CNW coaches to the left, which likely dates the photo before any of them were rebuilt as cab cars (and received Phase III paint).

Also, Kato never did the later SDP40F's as shown in this photo, nor did they offer any of the early units in Phase III paint.

Please tell us a little about that cab car!

Certainly! It's a kitbash combining the cab from a Bachmann Metroliner, a Kato Amfleet I, and the doors from a pair of Amfleet II (because the 963x series used on the San Diegan had Amfleet II doors, just to make it hard for me personally, I guess.) Much of the underbody detail was scratchbuilt or rearranged, and the light bar is fully functional. Other lighting includes the headlight of course, red markers, and the number boards.
