Yea, same reaction here, but I guess it's no sillier than a lot of the other paint schemes they are producing. And they aren't alone, just look at BLI's new locomotive releases. Let's dumb everything down for the masses, as long as it sells, and apparently it does...

If it gives the companies capital to keep making high quality models I have no issue with foobs.

As long as the manufacturers label the "foobs" as such, I also have no problem with them.  Most are obvious to most modelers, but some of the more realistic ones can fool people who don't "get the joke", or know a fair amount about older railroads.

I can understand using the wrong body, in many cases, as it would be prohibitively expensive to make every prototype freight car variation.
