Well, Lowes has a 24" x 80" hollow core door for $39.99 and 2' x 4' 1/2" plywood for $23.62, which would be $47.24 for 24" x 96".  And even 1/4" plywood would be OK in that frame, and that is only $31.02 for 2 quarter sheets. 

So, I would not think the price difference is an issue.

What thickenss plywood did you have in mind?  1/2"? 3/4"? 1"? The construction of HCD (cardboard honeycomb in between 2 thin pieces of plywood) makes it much more rigid than just plywood.  On the train layouts rigidity is important (even if that means having to deal with that hollow base construction).  Plus HCD is lighter than plywood (so easier to move if needed).

Lighter by a lot, esp. when you get to the 3/4" stuff.

Plywood can be problematic too, in the sense that the good stuff is terribly expensive nowadays (pushing $100 for a sheet of 3/4" baltic birch BB) and the cheap stuff will warp like the mind of an
