Hmmm.  I always thought that (regardless of whether some online forum has a respect point system or not), a "+1" simply meant that one agreed with the contents of the previous (or quoted) post.
As the OP asked "What do I do to indicate that I like a particular post?"
+1 can mean you like something also not just agree with it.

The great thing about forums with words is that you can always reinforce what you mean by a +1 (or -1) or Up Arrow or Like by simply explaining your feelings on the matter at hand.
