I'm somewhat surprised we haven't had similar tragedies in our town. We have the classic situation of multi-track crossings with one seeing very slow, very long trains 18-20 times a day, the kind of train movements that cultivate motorist contempt for the crossing warnings. The other tracks are at 45 mph, and, of course, you don't see or otherwise process there could be a much faster train on another track. We once witnessed a barely-miss firsthand where I'm sure the four kids in the car had to change underwear on getting home.
