Concrete sidewalk size

Ed, I was in the same boat not that long ago. I was trying for older sidewalks in industrial areas, so a little more narrow and small. 3/8", while most correct with my measurements, it struck my eye as too large, 3/16" too small. I went with 1/4" square, .040" square curbs, Model Master aircraft grey and India Ink for color:





I'd agree with what you are doing in an urban area that multiple sizes would be best, looking forward to the results!

Lucas:  Looks about right for many older residential sidewalks I've seen, in both Pasco and Kentucky.  It isn't unusual for one person to step off the concrete if two people meet.

Looks good to me. Think that's how I'll do it. Getting close to needing to put down some sidewalk (LPP  are getting tired of walking in the street).

Not really sure if you need to scribe or have lines molded into the concrete. I use .o4o" styrene sheet cut into whatever width I need for the sidewalk. I use 6 scale foot wide strips for everywhere, tho I could see having a 10' wide sidewalk in the retail districts. At least for the fronts of the stores -- the sidewalks going along the side walls at the end of the block could be narrower.
I don't have any joint lines in the strips and you don't really notice they're not there. But painting a single square a different color (where the sidewalk was replaced) gives the illusion of joints in the whole thing. And chopping out a square and replacing it with a broken up or tilted slab is another quick way to make it look realistic.

Also sidewalks, just like roads, do no weather evenly. Streaks and/or blotches of slightly different colors will make the sidewalk look older and used.

Ed, we used the 1/4 inch on my layout and used PollyScale Concrete for the paint. I am with Lee though on this no one will notice if you weather them up and add some trash and crap.
