Hard to believe he shot this with a cheap little 3 megapixel point-and-shoot balanced on a stack of quarters at the edge of the layout!

What I find impressive is the depth of field in that photo (taken by an old point-and-shoot 3 megapixel camera).

My go-to camera for all my magazine articles for the past 15 years or so has been a Canon A630
point-and-shoot that cost me all of $180.  It is 8 MP, not 3, but still,
it is a point-and-shoot that has full manual control: f/stop, exposure time, and ISO.   
I know... I'm a cheapskate.  But it works.

It was a lot of fun, and so fundamental to my learning of how to do this stuff. For example, I learned that I DON'T need to static grass everything...

It was the building block that has then, later, allowed me to do this:

You have developed a "signature" look, so when I see photos of your layouts, I know they were taken on your pike.  And they do look realistic, so it's a good signature look, too. ..The pics say "bleak northeast day" to me...It looks like it could snow later!

Ed's modeling and photos are some of the most realistic scenes I have seen (in any scale).  They look real, not like a train layout.  I think the muted colors are a large part of the effect, the fine ground cover textures and natural looking vegetation also play a big role.  Also living in the Northeast and looking at those photos I too feel the clammy chill of a cool gloomy Fall day with possibility of snow.

Reminds me of Lance Mindheim's Monon in winter layout.

That was my goal!
The first time I saw Lance's Monon, I said "I'm gonna do that". I haven't looked back since.
Things actually came full circle when he came to check out my current layout a few months ago.
