I doubt there is a correlation between sales at a hobby shop for a road name based on the location of the shop relative to the railroad's location/operation.

I used to frequent a couple of old, well-established and very well-stocked hobby shops. Both of them would order up to four times as many pieces of rolling stock in local roadnames as others, and quite often they still sold out those roads before the rest.

All of the hobby shops around here specialize almost exclusively in local roadnames. Makes sense since most modelers tend to gravitate towards the roads they see around them every day (or remember from their youth).
