The P&LE is a Howard Fogg inspired scheme, no ALCo yard goat ever had those el-huge-O reporting marks on the P&LE.  The red oval herald is incorrect.  The Pacemaker Green is correct.

I am delighted to see the mogul.  It appears that Bachpersonn is going to bear the standard for small and average sized N scale steam.  Maybe they will issue the 'modern' eight wheeler in N, as well.

I love that Rio Grande Southern C-19 2-8-0 in large scale.  I've always had a "thing" for the RGS.

So is the 50' box from a real prototype or a chimera like Bachmann's latest 40' box release?

I was just looking at the above PDF file, specifically at the N-Scale Alco S-4 information. This is what caught my and raises more questions than answers:

S4 DIESEL LOCOMOTIVE (DCC EQUIPPED)

All new tooling.

Features include:

• die-cast gear tower

Does anyone have any idea why a die-cast gear tower would be a desired feature? I have to assume that die-cast means some type of metal and not plastic. What other current production locomotives use a die-cast gear tower?

Thanks for any information

Mark

Probably just an attempt to get as much weight as possible in the loco. For the same reason Atlas went with a diecast long hood.

Hard to tell on the pic but that mogul appears to have a laird slide.  Good to see more modern cylinders on the mogul.  I wonder if they will fit on the ten wheeler an vice versa?  Just thinking, er kit bashing, out loud...

I wonder if the pickup is like the older Atlas and Kato units, that had the halves of the gear tower cast in the same material as the frames and electricity was conducted by the frame riding on  a rounded part of the gear box. One problem with that consturction was dirt accumulation which would affect running, and I think was part of the reason to the switch of copper/phosphor bronze pickup strip method.

Hooray for the new Bachman S-4. I think it looks very good. Bachmann is going to offer a new Mogul too I see which looks kind of chintzy from the photos I've seen and two new railcars. Great! Whoopee Doo. Happy days for N scale.
When is anyone going to offer other significant steam locos in N scale other than the Challenger and the 2-8-0? Don't get me wrong, I LOVE the way my new Spectrum 2-8-0 runs!! It's what made me come back to N scale, but I crave something more. How about a 4-8-4 that runs as well as my new 2-8-0 does. Or a good running Mikado? Or Pacific? [sigh] I'm not talking about rare, obscure engines used by few RR's but meat and potatoes steam locos run by most lines.
Bachmann just released a new C-19 in 1:20 scale, [suggested retail price; 1575.00 dollars] I guess N scale locomotives with their finicky minute engineering, selling for about 150 bucks each, looks like less fruitful pursuits compared to designing 1:20 scale engines around their Big Hauler mechanisms and having China glue new plastic parts on it looks more productive. Hey, I'm a good capitalist and I'd do the same thing in their shoes!! They've sold tons of their G scale Big hauler train sets in retail stores and LHS based on a nebulous scaled version of the ET&WNC's [Tweetsie RR] number 12 engine. The Big Hauler model, you know what I mean. Nobody even knows what scale the d--ned thing is, 1:20, 1:22...it's a toy. Bachmann cranks them out like Pez dispensers.
MAYBE N SCALE NEEDS TO FORM A UNION. Seriously. Maybe we need to poll all N scale modelers to find out what the most preferred locomotives are. THEN, we need to vote with our wallets and pre-order specific locomotives we would want in our collections. Maybe with that kind of commitment, Bachmann, Atlas, etc. might feel the needed incentive to design and produce the engines we all dream of having in limited runs. They might cost a lot more than what we pay now. But, if they were made well and in limited runs, they'd be worth the price.
Just a thought. Otherwise we're all going to grow old waiting for them to occasionally throw us a bone.

I can't help but to wonder if the new 2-6-0 boiler could be adapted to the Ten Wheeler... if it could it would provide for a bit more modern of a steamer than what is presently possible, such as SAL L2 605 and ACL K-5 941 shown in the images linked too below...
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/ACL-SAL-SCLmodeler/attachments/folder/846348859/item/911988443/view?picmode=original&mode=tn&order=ordinal&start=1&dir=asc
http://www.railpictures.net/photo/370940/

I suspect that it was a freight version of a Ten Wheeler (with 64" drivers on the ACL steamer and 67" on the SAL, possibly dual service) but modern enough to be reasonably valuable for branchline passenger trains.  I hope that I will yet be able to figure out how the boiler change might just be done...

Here are a few more shots of the prototype engines that resemble the Bachmann boiler...
