That is what the listing says. Solid Stripe E8 in Tuscan. Does not say what lettering is on the rear end or if there are two keystones or one keystone or if they have the large Pennsylvania side lettering. As I said earlier if Kato uses their noodle they can do at least 7 or 8 PRR paint schemes for the E8. They can also do the austerity scheme where there was no stripe and just two side Keystone emblems.

New Tuscan Red Solid Stripe and re-released Brunswick Green five Stripe GG1

They are re-issuing 4935 Blackjack instead of running a new number.  They must be getting substantial requests for that particular unit to forgo releasing it with a new number to entice the repeat buyers.  The plus is that the orientation of the lettering in relation to the front of the unit will be correct.

Kato also has the opportunity to apply the correct gold leaf lettering and stripes on the 4935 instead of the imitation gold or whatever it was they used on the first release.

So what would be the most common scheme for the E8?  Is it the broad band single stripe?

The striping depends on what years you are modeling.  I don't have my references available now but the DGLE (almost black to me) was the first, followed by the 5 stripe and then (as a cost cutting) single stripe.  The final paint was just dipping in tuscan and slaping on some keystones.

The single stripe wasn't cost-cutting as much as it was a complete re-design of the corporate image.  IIRC my PRR library indicates that the single-stripe and shadow keystone that came along with it marked the first time PRR went outside its corporate design department for a new corporate image (other than keeping Raymond Lowey on retainer).

Hi Folks,

I second your thoughts Dave. The Austerity scheme was just that. I do not think they even got a dip Bob as some of the paint just seemed to fall off. I do not think there was a lot of prepping before they applied the coat. I thought that the E units were a pretty boring bunch of locos but my mind was changed when I bought the Withers Publication on the Es and PAs. I cannot recall at the moment how many E8s I need to have one of each variant and or colour scheme. 5700 and 5701 both had twin headlights when issued to service. A later photo shows 5701 with the lower headlight covered and a Keystone applied over it. Then the changes keep happening.It would have been great if Kato had made provision for the lift rings to be applied. But what the heck it is still a very good model and it runs like a dream. My fleet has grown and I look forward to the day when I can run 5700 in DGLE with full train phones.

There are a couple manufacturers of lift rings.  Your problem would be getting a paint to match.  Also trainphone antenna available as Dave has shown on his RS-11. 

In my early days I bought a E-8b unit, not realizing that the PRR never had any (E-7b they had).  I still have it stashed somewhere wondering what I could do with it.

Hi Bob,

I was lucky enough to get the lift rings from MB Klien so have bought enough to do me for a while until I can get my own etched. I also have the GMM train phone stanchions. I do not really like them as they are not really representative of the individual antennae and they do not provide the right coils for each application. A couple of my bodies I have need the dynamic brake removed and I also want to apply lift rings. I would like to be able to get a good view of the rear of the loco to see what lift rings should be applied there if any. Anyway that is for another day and a bit more research.

With the B Unit I would look on MB Klien and get a Undec A Unit body like I have done with the Passenger Pilots and single headlight or passenger pilots and double headlight. Then you can have the DGLE variant. Do not have to worry about matching paint then.

I have a couple brass locos with antenna, an unpainted E-7 and a Trainmaster.  Been thinking I could remove the antenna and but them on a Kato E-8 and an Atlas Trainmaster.  Guess a little heat from a soldering iron would loosen them.  Come to think of it, the E-7 also has the lift rings and I could probably reuse them.

Horror, My brass E7 runs as good as the Kato E8s and there is no way I would be touching it. It is still unpainted and is correct for as released.

Talk about looking and researching before you do something.  Just read some more about the E8s of the PRR. 5700 and 5701 were in the last PRR order and were issued to traffic dressed in Tuscan Red along with all the other units in the last order. More study required. Then there are the models that had the vertical air intake louvers. As stated there is more to this beast than first thought of.
