Besides being an orange box, that proto photo looks nothing like the MTL caboose.  And the proto photo you picked isn't even an International bay window caboose like the MTL copy states the model is based on.  In fact, the proto photo you picked appears to be a rebuilt rib-side car that the "upstart" company is doing.  So I think you further proved Sirenwerk's point?

Is it the same car - clearly no; is it fair to say it "looks nothing like the MTL caboose"...no. if you are applying proto-standards (ie: an exact copy) then it doesn't but it is no worse than 100's of MTL "stand in's" that have graced the shelves of LHS for 20 years. Thiose cars being "good enough" for 95% of the n scale public whether you like it or not.

Further; this model has been around a while so it is not unexpected to see it come out in different paint schemes and I seriously doubt they sit there in their offices and say "ooohh... let's issue "x" model because someone has announced a prototypical model for release in the next year..." I'll wager that their planned production schedule is many months out.....

Take it for what it is and let's quit the MTL sniping....geez............ ::)

The K4 is brass...  I saw 2 others just like it for sale at the NSE Convention in June.  They're on eBay from time to time.  The M1 is a do-it-yourselfer.

Joe,

You can do all the stand in heavyweight cars for CB&Q, GN, NP, SP&S.  You can do them in green, repainted or both and I will buy them all!!  If I ever get time to devote to custom proto accurate sides I will use them as the core for the project.  It is all good!! ;D

I saw a Key M-1a and a PSC K-4s at a LHS this past weekend. Both on consignment listed for $300 each and I *so* wanted to pull the trigger on one (well, both) of them but it's just a little out of budget range right now.
