Trainworx Rio Grande caboose

Those of you who have also purchased the (checks inventory) most expensive caboose I own may find the following link to be of interest:

It has the ESU ScaleTrains.com tender light board, and I am unsure what form factor or ESU part number this is. Mine came with software version 1.0.1469 which per the LokProgrammer is up to date as of today. Note the comments about CVs 36 and 37 for those of us who use Digitrax.

Interesting.  I have couple of Scale Trains Turbines with tenders and while ESU sound decoders are used in the locos, the tender light is controlled by non-ESU-brand decoders.

Interesting. Thanks for the photos.  So there is no decoder (didn't someone mentioned a decoder?) - just a light board with LEDs, resistors and diodes.  With all the Chines characters printed  on it I doubt it is made by ESU.  Or were these models available in DC and DCC versions?

This was a dc version. There is a version with an esu dcc board in it. I just don’t have one. I may get a dcc board from Pat for a kit I bought but not at the moment since I want to see about putting an esu function only decoder into this but I need to think about it for a bit.

I ended up picking up one of the black ones as a souvenir to my family's trip to Salt Lake City over Spring break. Although I had the one with the orange cupola in my hand first, but changed my mind and grabbed the black one. Knowing now that the orange cupola'd one was a switching platform for the SLC area, I wish I would have kept it now.

Aaaaaanyways. Question, Do the black ones have lighting? I've ran mine on my DCC layout, and don't see any lighting at all. I know it's not DCC, but I wasn't sure about any other lighting.

EDIT: I caved, found the website for the hobby shop that I got my caboose from, and ordered the orange cupola'd one also.

They do not have the lights pipes on the models I saw and the black ones as delivered (and what Pat produced) did not have marker lights mounted under the end awnings. Now later in life there are a few that were rebuilt that retained their black paint and got the awning mounted marker lights but as delivered they would have lights mounted to holders on the upper corners of the sidewalls.

That is kind of why I had to buy a kit since I have a caboose to model that soldiered on into the 70’s in black paint but with some of the modernization added like new windows and end lights.
