That type of sound just seems out of scale to me.

It can easily be so, but I find that adjusting the subwoofer for just a slight hint of a rumble works out well enough. One thing that helps is, on the stationary decoder, I turn off all the sound channels except for the prime mover.  It also helps to have the exact same decoder and sound files, so that the sound keeps in pretty close sync.

I want the sound to be at least somewhat similar to what I think I would hear if I was at a distance from the prototype that would make it appear to me to be the size of the model from my vantage point.

I still think that most N scale steam sounds fall a bit short of that.  But, I think it is closer than having the table-shaking bass of a subwoofer under the layout.
